FYI- I revised my big picture posts on Page 1 to introduce the project better and summarize the techniques/processes I used. I also did the picture posts on Page 2 to describe the process for plastic and topcoat. Check it out if you want. If you do check it, let me know feedback on how it is written and if it needs anything. Thanks

For illustration purposes, here is what the paint job looks like on my case:

Updates!

Well fellow members here are some of the fruits of my labor; I hope this gives the people a good preview of what it will look like that are checking out my project until I finish the rest of the pieces. I can confidently say I achieved the perfection I was aiming for. Remember now excellent quality paintwork is 90 percent dependent on the quality of preparation. I hope all of you like the preview of the finished paint job because I just could not wait to share it. The whole project is less than half-done though. Most of the pictures did not capture the metallic/iridescent effect unfortunately.

This is what it looked like after just painting, it is good, but not perfect.

Another picture, you can see the metallic here but does not look good in the camera.

Here is the piece now sanded down with 1500 grit.

Now the piece sanded with 2000 grit. Not really that much of a difference.

Mission accomplished. Finally!

I used the tool as a reference to show the excellent gloss and image depth.

Close ups :

Before it was done!!

Now after, You can clearly see the deep glass-like luster and clear reflection. All that hard work was well worth it I think.

This is another insanely beautiful picture of the panel. You cannot see the
metallic/iridescent effect though.

Will someone peel this orange skin off the panel for me lol? This is the panel before I am going to sand it, buff and polish it just to have a before and after picture. This is the next panel to get done.

Here is some the rest of the parts all painted up but not sanded, buffed and polished yet. I think they look good just the way they are. However, why settle for good when you can have it look like the above.

More and More pictures !!

I still have a lot more work ahead of me. I am making progress though. I want to thank everyone in advance if you show your appreciation of the work and leave feedback. Let me know if anyone has any questions or suggestions. Thank you everyone for viewing and leave comments to let me know how I did. This is my first time painting a computer case though. I hope this project is helping OCN members know what is possible and inspires them.

Nice work painting the case man. It's all about prep work for sure. And it helps to have good atmospherics (which you have had) and a dust free place to do the work. Did you find that the plastic parts got a little weird when you painted them? I've painted three A900s with MetalCast Duplicolor and each time the plastic is the biggest PIMA...it seems to almost melt or become porous as I lay up color.

Quote:
Paint
1) Self etching primer - DuPont™ Variprime -If surface is taken down to bare metal.
2) High build primer/surfacer -- same item as above just use this type or use primer/sealer if not stripping old paint off. Sealer prevent problems from reactions to the old finish
3) Base coat - DuPont™ ChromaBase® I used cause of its quality, easy use, value and appearance. doesnt give me any trouble durring application.
4) Clear coat - DuPont™ ChromaClear® I use for its gloss an outstanding durability.
5) Finishing compound - 3M™ Finesse-It™ Finishing Material takes out those 1500 and 2000 grit scratches.
6) Polish material - 3M™ Perfect-It™ Ultrafine Swirl Mark remover / Turtle Wax polishing compound makes it like glass and takes out all those swirl marks from the buffing
Doesn't get much better than that.

Looking good

Were you using self-etching primer? I find that plastic is generally easier to paint and streaks less. @OP: Great job on the painting, it looks really nice.

Thank you for the great feedback im pleased that you like it. It is a honor to have your post here. Yes the plastic was a PIMA for me too but it was just the labor that was driving me insane. Did not have a bit of trouble that your mentioning. The scuffing and the adhesion promoter helped out. Maybe your paint doesnt like the plastic or you possibly have to use primer/sealer which effectively "seals" the plastic from the topcoat preventing the problems your having. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Thank you very much glad you like it. Generally self-etching primer is not used on plastic it is used on metal it treats the metal with some corrosion resistance and chemically “etches” the metal like a metal conditioner. High build primer/surfacer or sealer should be used on plastic.

Ya, I know, using it could present some problems. But considering it's CD, I don't think he'd make that kind of mistake. Btw, shame on you for a double post

Ya sorry my bad . I was reading the CD's post before your post was there and then replying to it when I seen your post after the fact. Oops. You can slap me in the back of the head later Lol.

Yes I agree 100%. CD has too much experience to make that mistake.
