Hey chaps, Ive been looking at making a mini media centre/server for ages. Wanted to hook it up behind my 32" samsung HDTV for:
MOBO: £86.36 http://www.jetway.com.tw/jw/ipcboard...proname=NC62K# MINI-ITX (17x17cm) supports up to 65W quad core phenom! up to 2gb 1066mhz ddr2 ram 4 sata ports 8200 nividea graphics chipset supporting hybrid sli (DX10) 2x gigabit LAN 7.1 sound DVI hdmi output bluray capable 10 USBs Overclocking settings that put many mobos to shame! ![]() WIRELESS: £10 DLINK N wirless pci card CPU: £55 AMD AM2+ 4850e 45W 2.5ghz with 1U copper heatsink (£24.21) Keyboard/Mouse: £14 BTC 9116URF mini wireless Keyboard mouse / joystick CD/DVD: £15 Slim laptop dual layer DVDRW drive RAM: £50 1x2gb 1066mhz kingston hyperX ![]() ALREADY HAVE: 160GB 2.5" WD scorpio drive CASE!!!: £10 well i wanted something cool, wii case was too small so when i saw my old sega megadrive in the attic i couldnt resist. SEGA Megadrive 2 (the square one with push buttons for power and reset) (21.5cmx21cmx5.5cm) PSU & misc: £50 120W DC-DC PSU & 200W AC-DC adapter & molex/sata adapter bits n bobs ![]() TOTAL so far: £277 ANYWAY all on order and im still to decide on psu but I will post some snaps when its all here and getting put together what do you think>? keep the sega retro or give it a spray job too? ![]() ![]() DELIVERY DAY 1!!! got my sega and its mint! £10 off ebay , well happy mobo, heatsink and dvdrwSlim to IDE adapter all from LinITX.com AM2 4850e from ebay £50 ![]() Out with the old......................... ![]() IN WITH THE NEW! ![]() The brain and cooler: ![]() ![]() The sega case has all sorts of lumps and bumps so need to chop the unnessasary ones off to make room. UPDATE after playing: Chaps , well as it is i cant have the dvd drive in there but the rest fits! ![]() ![]() the psu is mostly external 120W ACDC brick external with the 200W DCDC , the internal bit: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWN:IT&ih=016 I LOVE the put something in a sega game cartridge idea but i did want to have the slot as an air inlet. The was a add-on for the sega megadrive 2 (32bit something or the cd addon thing) which would be PEEERFECT!: UPDATE Delivery day 2 Been sanding, filing, melting and sawing the case last night and got the motherboard sat perfectly: ![]() This is what is was like at the start: ![]() after: ![]() UPDATE: Power/reset button fully functional in place of the sega ones and got my wireless keyboard mouse which is very neat for good storage and flexible use ![]() ![]() ![]() Day 3: Took the keyboard reciever apart, wrapped it in electrical tape and sloted it in on the motherboard (top left) and rewired the usb to a motherboard usb header. The keyboard was cheap and its wireless range reflects this .![]() ok , just got my little molex to sata power adapter and the bloody sata connect sticks out a mile and more than hits the RAM, not allowing the hard drive to fit in the space allocated. A bit of trimming and bending and sealing later and i have myself a super slim miniturised 90 degree angle sata power connector ![]() ![]() Ok so I got immpatient and went to PCWorld and bought a 250W psu to make sure it all worked today and it does! lol . boot time is wicked even though im using vista 32 (had a spare licence) get about 5.6 5.4 4.5 3.5 5.5 in vista score before drivers were put on so im quite impressed. the test setup lol: ![]() The guts and a lil summary of what still to do: ![]() o and i need to mount USBs on the front The product so far: note: not fully closed as i still need to work out how to hold/screw it shut! ![]() ![]() and after a bit of cable tidying (minus the LEDs and buttons) and note the line of vent holes to the right , there are 2 rows, 1 of which cant be seen as its on the vertical wall: ![]() dad taught me how to solder properly because the power supply doesnt fit in as it is, i broke the skinny DC-DC psu trying to solder it so had the master show me how its done. see the 2nd vid , all fit in there nicely now! Oh and FYI the sqeeling is from the cheap power supply struggling to kick out all that power on its measly 12V rail

If I were putting PC components into a Megadrive I'd try my best to keep the original case as authentic as possible. Although you're going to have a very hard job finding room for a HDD.

Just a tight squeeze thats all. And where is the PSU gonna go? Are you going to do the Pico PSU, cause that does not have enough juice I dont think.
I will retract my doubt when the time is right, should it work out that way. You are just going to have to prove it to me. I want to see it done. If this wasn't an awesome project I would'nt have subscribed.

what you need to do is get a game and mod it to look like its in the caseto get you more room. and make the HDD Esata and mount it out side the case with the cable comming out of the controller port

Could use a SSD, there small enough to fit inside most likely, no clue about the PSU. Maybe a special PSU that's like a 360's?

Why not make a riser sort of thing for the top.
For example figure out how much height you require and create risers around it.
