Yeah. I even smoke while painting because cancer sucks but fire is cool!
Looks like I just got put behind a day since I have to let it dry so i can sand it off.
Edit - here is a representation of what I was trying to accomplish. It's all screwed now, but it's just a general idea. I think I am going to stick with just the black.

Sunlight really won't effect paint adversely, really it will help. The added heat helps the paint dry and release the fumes in it. I always try to paint in direct sunlight for this reason "Speed painting' between the same color coats is usually fine, because its the same paint, same chemicals. But if you add another paint over that (like you did with the copper) the bottom layer needs to be FULLY cured. At least a few hours, not a cigarette break

Well that explains it then.
If I decide to go through with reattempting both colors, after I do the first few coats (black), and wait for a while for the fumes to release, will I need to sand the area i intend to go over with copper or just shoot it straight on? Also, will I need to reprime it? I have plenty of primer if neccesary, but TBH, This is my first ever attempt at multiple colors simultaneously. I guess it's all part of modding. You can't be scared to mess up once in a while.

It's dry enough to sand off now but the 220 grit I have isn't even going thru the copper and getting to the black. Looks like I have to get some 80 grit.
UNLESS there is some kind of bio-degradeable stripper that I can wash down the drain in my back yard. I don't want to kill the grass/trees nearby and pose an environmental hazard in the process since it will be washed down the drain when I hose it off.
Any ideas? I'd like to strip it to bare metal and retry. As quickly as possible.

Light scuffing

No re-prime

I would only spray black around the ared to be 'blacked', you don't have to do the whole thing (you probably know that though). The let the black dry fully, tape off what you don't want copper, give the area left a light sanding, spray the copper, let it dry completely and then uptape.

Edit:
NO 80 grit! My word, you'll have scratches everywhere lol. You don't have to go back to bare metal, just sand it down until it's smooth, that's all. That 220 should sand well enough (you really should be using 320-400 and up) keep at it. Anything lower, like that 80 you mentioned, will gouge it so bad you'll have to massively prime it, and you don't have to prime. Just sand it smooth, and reshoot your black and copper.

So I dont need to totally strip it? I just don't like the idea of coat after coat on there.
Especially since the copper bubbled up because the black wasn't cured yet.

So basically you're saying just scuff it and reshoot it, or should I go ahead and reprime it to have a nice, good surface?

Not scuff, sand first. You have to sand the coats on there now until it's back smooth (preferably get most/all of the copper off, since it was the coat that peeled). No, you don't have to go back to the bare metal. The primer is good and the black is good (just wasn't cured). All you need to do is smooth out the finish (ie-sanding off a few layers) to get it back smooth and remove the trouble part (the copper). As long as the black is cured you can shoot over that, the paint doesn't have to stick to a primer first. The primer just holds to the metal (in this case) and then the paint holds to the primer. Your primer and first black coats are already 'stuck' (for lack of a better term ) so you just need to sand back smooth and respray. Maybe that clears it up,lol. And don't worry about all the layers of paint, their not that thick altogether So a short list
  • Sand smooth with most/all copper off
  • Respray black areas
  • Let cure fully
  • Tape off area that will remain black
  • Lightly scuff remaining area
  • Spray copper
  • Let cure fully
  • Untape

perfect. Thank you for the clarification. Tomorrow, I expect perfection. I will sand it down tonight after dinner. I really hope it turns out better tomorrow.

Update:
Took the optical cage to bare metal.
Round 2 primer:

That's better.
Took an hour and a half of sanding, cursing, smoking and scraping to get it to a surface that I thought to be acceptable for primer. Thats 1 coat. Shooting second coat now.
Thats it for tonight, as its dark and I cannot continue.
Thanks for all the support
