Why dont you just use the xbox's video card and CPU. I softmodded mine, and its very nice, and it can play HD videos, you need to convert HD videos to h263p though. You can use the dvd playback kit and stuff to control it, it outputs up to 1080i and putting a new harddrive in is cheap and easy.

because, then it wouldn't be
1. as cool
2. as efficient
3. as cool

everyone thinks that it's cooler to softmod an old xbox - why would i put all this effort into softmodding a system that shipped in 2001 (that's the date on the components in the case)? i'd rather just put new stuff in there and make it awesome =)

edit: yeah, i'm thinking that a video card would be a worthwhile investment just to allow me to skin up xp so it isn't so damn ugly. if i use xp...i might just load linux on it and use VLC player for the media.

i checked some benchmarks online - they're all saying that the atom 330 can handle 720p pretty well (at least 24 fps the whole time, which is all you need) and that 1080i is a little sketch (21 fps, so a little glitchy). but it'll handle a dvd pretty well, i think. it'd only be displaying like 1280x768 or something on my TV, i don't have a huge tv. just a little 26" widescreen.

i would suggest obviously m-atx but if you wanted to pump it up go BTX for sure they have all kinds of slim kits for btx too.....thats how most of the slim cases are built by dell, hp, etc. they make btx lga 775 so im sure you could throw a great cpu on it and a pci-e 90 degree bend would work well for a great gfx card

while it'd be an interesting idea to use a mod chip and such using the original hardware, the fact is that it'll barely run XP. He wants this to be a good HTPC rig. Using a Atom 330, and if you could put a half-decent GPU w/ it, you might even be able to run vista...
However XP and some 3rd party media center software would be much more economical. overall I really like your plan tho

It's really too bad there aren't any functional XBOX emulators out yet. You could still play xbox games on it if you wanted even w/ the new hardware

when you say HTPC what exactly do you mean, the modde xbox OS xbox media center, works perfectly, it can go on the internet, is an FTP server to transfer files, and it can play all video files, and view pictures.

You're are lucky you are getting an Atom 330. I kind of wish i waited so i could have gone dual core, but i just sealed the mobo into the case so oh well.

So far i think you're looking at: $170 w/o shipping
Intel BLKD945GCLF2/Atom 330 : $80
picoPSU 120w power kit : $55
HP Laptop DVD burner drive : $35

I think i've spent around $200 on my PS2PC, so just to give you an idea about how much you might have to put into this mod.

This will be great dude, keep going!
