you obviously don't know the limitations of the xbox hardware. i'd barely be able to get any version of xp running on a modded xbox. and there's no way a haxbox would be able to play 720p content. the original's only got a sub-1 ghz processor and some 64 megs of ram - there's no way it could handle it.

as i mentioned in my initial post, i'm going for a cheap HTPC - buying a 150$ kit for btx, spending as much each on a cpu and graphics card...that'd all make for a nice system but it's not what i want. i don't need a gaming machine - that's what my main system is for. this is just for playing movies, and since hi-def content is dependent almost solely on the cpu for processing power, i don't need a huge graphics card. a 1.6ghz dual-core atom 330 should be enough to more than handle hi-def content, and since it'll only be working on my home system i won't even need to have anti-virus on it, since anything that goes onto it will be filtered through my system.

higgins has the right idea - it's meant to be solely a movie pc.

regardless, i'm not just putting a damn modchip in - this is a computer forum, and i'm making a real computer out of it, not hacking 7-year-old software and hardware. i want something that'll last longer than a year or two.

does anyone know where to get a converter for an old laptop dvd drive (i think it's ultrabay 2000 - it's from an ibm r40 laptop) to something i can use here? because i don't want to buy a new one if i don't have to.

also, if you find good prices on a pci (NOT pci-e) riser that'd put the card away from the mobo, shoot me a link. i haven't found one for less than like 30$ or so shipped.

I'm subscribed. I too would take an Atom any day over XBOX proprietry stuff. Plus its far more fun and we get a great case/hardware mod. With a decent (ish) PCI card you could get a pretty good gaming rig too.
Props
As for a riser card - they don't come up too often.

You could also consider a half-height compatible PCI GPU.
