sure thing, man. the inside of the case measures 11 5/8ths by 8 1/4 at the edges, 8 5/8ths at the middle, and about 9 at the fan grate. it's about 3 1/8 inches high, but that's a guess because of the design of the case (lips on both the top and the bottom).

hard drive, ram, and dvd drive came yesterday afternoon, with my copy of sanderson's 'hero of ages' (hooray!). when the board and psu comes in (thursday?) i'll show you all that too.

edit: so, i'm thinking about how i'm going to do the paint job on this system. i'm thinking just cleaning off the case, painting the whole thing this really deep black, and fading in some green in a band across the top. i'll tape in the name (vintage) so that it still looks black, and i might outline it with something. does anyone know anything about fading paint in? cause i know next to nothing about it.

hey im also planning to put a HTPC inside a xbox, here's my thread, i have a few questions, but its not gonna be started for a month

1. can you use the original front power button to plug into the mobo?

2. after i put my mitx board in do u think there will be enough space for this cooler only, its height is only 2 inches.

3. how are you gonna keep everything in place like the hdd and dvd drive?

4. where are u gonna place your fans and how many?

5. why aren't you using a laptop dvd drive or a laptop hdd? do u think there will be enough space inside the xbox?

thanks, these answers are gonna help me a lot
1. can you use the original front power button to plug into the mobo?
there is no front power plug on an xbox. there's a button, though, if that's what you meant. i'm planning on using it to turn it on and off (although i'm not sure how yet).

no, i don't think so. consider that your mobo's gonna be raised off the floor of the xbox to begin with, and the interior height isn't much more than 2.75 or 3 inches, i think.

Quote:
3. how are you gonna keep everything in place like the hdd and dvd drive?
probably by using the original brackets, actually. i'll have to mod them a bit to fit around the mobo, but it should fit and have good air flow.

Quote:
4. where are u gonna place your fans and how many?
i'm using an atom cpu, not that heat-hog that you're planning on, so i only need a fan for the chipset, not the cpu itself. i'm just going to add a little intake under the jewel (carve out the jewel a bit for a custom grill) and then use the 70mm that was part of the xbox for the outtake.

Quote:
5. why aren't you using a laptop dvd drive or a laptop hdd? do u think there will be enough space inside the xbox?
i'm planning on using the original brackets, and that's what was in there before. i don't want to have to worry about system slowing from a 5400 or 4200rpm hd.

i should point out that it's pretty obvious that you didn't really plan your mod before you posted. your power supply is 3 inches high, and i just posted that the interior is AT MAX (dont' forget that the top cover is concave) 3 inches high. aka, it won't fit. it's a cool idea, but i'd really be surprised if that setup you've got doesn't just overheat as soon as it's closed up. you should go with a mini-box 200w psu instead of that inefficient monster.

Just use the front panel.. theres a power and eject button, and with your PCB im not even sure you will have to solder anything from the pic u posted.

Though be aware that i have had to download a program that binds a key to eject the drive because for some reason the physical eject button is non-functional when plugged into the ide converter board.. kind of ticked

EDIT: probably something along the lines of using a spare molex and splicing the wires to 12v LEDs

i want to carve the name into the top right through to the back of the case, put in green 1/8" plexi underneath, and light the name with LEDs when it's on, and i want to be able to switch it on and off by hitting the eject button.

think that it's possible? i know what leds to use (just some 3.3v 20ma green leds) but i don't know what resistors to use, and whether i'm supposed to do them in parallel or in series.

edit 15 ohm, 1/2 watt is what they're saying. i only buy 1, right? the real question will be how to exactly control the lights from here.

ok these are the leds i recommend, they are SUPER bright but are $2.75 each and require a heatsink, but i made my own and the site includes shipping, here are pictures i included one is of a single 5mm LED, one is of a 15 lumen blue 1W LED, and the other is a gree 50 lumen 1W LED. The green one is about 10x brighter then the blue but they look the same, they both can light a dark room. The green one actually hurts to look straight at, the blue doesn't
Items needed
LED(1W) green or Blue
Heatsink ( you will need thermal compound, just use CPU thermal paste)
Resistors (here is a calculator)
for the resistors it recommends a 3.3W 37Ohm one to go from a 12v source to the 3v needed
