Default Update: 8800GT's & T-Rad2's

Okay, this next part was a little tricky. The objective: SLI two video cards with aftermarket cooling that is effective yet makes full use of at least one PCI slot on my motherboard.

Enter Thermalright:

When I first saw that Thermalright was coming out with the T-Rad2, I just knew I had to have one! (or two) They're so thin, yet so effective. I did have a slight compatibility issue with my iandh ramsinks, but Ian was so kind as to offer to trim them down for me. They should be getting here soon.

For now, here's these pics of it mounted, along with these 100mm x 12mm fans from Scythe: (Sorry so blurry)

Notice the extra holes in that last picture. As it turns out, those 100mm fans aren't as compatible with 92mm fan holes as advertised, lol. The issue I ran into was that the spacing was too close. So I had to drill and tap two holes in the T-Rad fan mount, and make two holes in the fan on the other side to mount into the existing mounting holes. I'm quite pleased with the results.

My second 8800GT, T-Rad, and set of fans came in just after Christmas. Merry Christmas to me!

Before & After:

Mounted:

Here they are on the board: (Don't mind that G.Skill RAM, it's temporary)

Available space in between:

As you can see, Tri-SLI is not an option with these coolers and the thinnest fans available installed. Oh well, I'm not planning on doing that with this board anyway, definitely not with these cards either, since they're not even compatible with Tri-SLI.

Here's my XtremeGamer installed in the PCI slot in between. It's snug, but it fits:

Small issue, however. When installed, a capacitor on the sound card gets a little bent by the screw coming out of the back of the bottom card.

For now, I'm not going to worry about it too much. But I'm open to any (sane) suggestions if anyone has any!

The back of the tray with the cards installed: (Secksy!)

The cards...

Uh oh! The SLI bridge can't get around the fan! I think I need the flex bridge, but I want the black one that EVGA has been giving out lately. They're hard to find!

Well, thanks for stopping by, that's pretty much it for now. I'll post more updates in a more timely fashion as I have them. I've been pretty excited about this build for some time now, and now I'm getting anxious to actually use it!

Thanks CR, and thanks for the

Ignore that stock Intel cooler, it's serving me faithfully until I finally find a TRUE Black. If I can't find one used, I'm going to be forced to buy a new one. ($75!?! That's crazy talk!)

Yes, powder-coating, except for the side panels and main exterior body. That's the factory Silverstone brushed aluminum finish. It looks nice as is, so Charles doesn't really do anything to mess with them.

Water cut, actually.

Lol, yeah, that's the one I bought from you. It's a good backup for me to use while I'm lapping, or any other mods I need to do where I need to take out the TRUE (when I finally get it).

I think the TRUE Black will suit the build better. That and I'd like to push that chip more than 2.4.

for that sli bridge you could cut/file down the corner of the fan until it fit, it doesnt look like you really need that much space and i think the static bridge looks better than the flex one.

btw put a link to this in your sig.... cause i want to be reminded of it alot

Yeah, I originally toyed with that idea, because I like the look of the solid bridge as well. But the reason I decided against it is because I know I'm not going to be keeping this stuff forever, and I'm probably going to want to one day sell it or use it for another purpose. And if I filed or cut the problem area off the fan in question, I would have to remove one of the mounting holes. And I just know I would kick myself for that later.

This is the one I want. Original pic posted by mnishimura00. He said EVGA sent it to him directly, so I'm going to have to send them a message.

Yeah, I'm going to put it in my sig soon, I just haven't gotten to it yet. But you know you can always subscribe, and any updates would show up in your User CP.

Or, if you're really feeling ambitious, you could link it in your own sig.

EDIT: By the way, I'm wanting to come up with some kind of original name for this project, something kind of catchy. I was thinking since it's a murderMod, and I'm probably the only one so far that's air-cooling it, I could play on the words "Murder on Air" or something. "The Flying Killer", "Floating Murder", something like that. So give me suggestions, and if I pick a suggestion from someone here, I might have something to give away to the winner.

Thanks Dangals, nice to see you stopping by!

Yeah sorry it took so long, I'm a hell of a procrastinator. But hopefully the end result will be worthwhile.

I'm afraid my picture quality is nowhere near MDPC standards, but I did learn from his site to use a stand, so my latter pictures should be much better quality.

The only issue I have is that I can't ever seem to get the backdrop I want to. You guys always have these backdrops that look like you have a room that's either all white or all black, and the whole room is lined with lights. I need to learn that trick.

Hopefully all the rest of you XS guys stop on by for a look-see. Maybe now that I'm posting the log, Nils might actually give me a drawing too. Charles emailed me a few months ago asking about it, and since I'm a drummer, I think they were going to give me a drummer theme. But I think they just got busy and Nils forgot. But I'm still holding out!
