Yup, Guru's correct.

I'm actually getting an Accelero GTX280 here tomorrow, I'm thinking I might paint the fans orange at some point in the later future. Thanks mfb

Default Installing the new Accelero GTX 280 cooler!

I've been talking about this in the Brass Bottom Boys GPU team thread and I posted this there. I figured I would add it to the log since it did involve some modding of the case. Always a work in progress eh?

So this is what we begin with. The Arctic Cooling Accelero GTX280 cooler. Now we had an issue previously.

The ramsinks and medium sized square sink in this above picture would not fit my non-reference XFX GPU.

This is the reference design PCB.

This is my PCB. I needed more ramsinks and also needed to cut the cooler on the left side and goes over the 'nvivio' chip.

This is where it all starts. I did some prep work on the cooler and then got the GPU out of the sig rig and went to work.

These small white washers go between the PCB and the cooler. A friend suggested gluing them to the cooler so you aren't trying to get them in place when putting the cooler on. I used a small dab of superglue to hold them in place, it was a -very- useful tip, lol.

Next the stock TIM had to go,

Better

Next I took all the stock screws out and removed the stock cooler.

Remember that larger block for the nvivo chip? It was the first on the chopping block, I needed it to clear a component on the board so I began to trim it up with my jigsaw.

*snip* lol

Just eyeing how much I needed to take off.

I took my handfile and began to shave off the cooler around this bit ont he board.

Just a little bit more

Perfect!

Next I drilled out two other holes so that the sink would have four even screws in it. Originally the two screwholes were in the middle of the sink, but with me cutting it there were off to one side and would not mount properly. I threaded two new holes and put it on the card.

A bit of IC7 Diamond TIM

Yup, it fits! That was really all I had to mod for the cooler parts. I thought I would need to cut up the ramsinks but I remembered I had some generic sinks from a previous cooler. I got them out and began to stick them on.

I decided to use on of the Accelero sinks and then the single ones. This way I didn't have to trim the other stock Accelero sink down, lol, I was tired of filing

DONE! Now for the "chunky" part

Another dab of IC7 Diamond (and some arguing with the small screws AC wants to use to mount it) and it was on!

Tada!

Default Part II

It was at this point I gave it a mockup install in the case and saw that the cooler was just too large for the Antec 300 (see previous posts). I got out my jigsaw and cut a bit out of the case. Sorry, I didn't get any pics of this. Suffice to say that halfway though cutting, my jigsaw seized up and I took 30 minutes to take it apart and free up the motor. I went back to cutting and two-thirds through the whole motor on the jigsaw died. I then had to use some wire cutters to finish the back of the cut. It's not pretty but it's functional. I'll clean up the cut with Underdog1425's dremel some day in the future. For now though, I got the card installed!

The chunk I had to cut out for the card to fit int he HDD rack area. I think I'm going to just take the whole HDD rack out and just put my 300gb in the spare 5.25" bay I have.

None of the sinks have fell off! (yet)

And some p0rn shots for everyone

Temps have dropped 10-15C (depending on the WU) and I'm currently folding at 1692mhz on the shaders; a full 2 straps above what I was running on air. And even better than that, ITS QUIET! I have the cooler set on 100% fan and all three of them are almost silent, especially after listening to the stock cooler at 100% for a month,LOL. I'm quite happy, even if I did have some set backs. Happy modding (and folding) guys!
