Default BrassIe (Case Mod '09)

Let's see... Where do I get start... I had a dell matx comp for awhile but I took it back home to replace a comp that was pretty out of date. Now I'm missing a comp and thought why not build another one? Of course, I wanted to still keep an matx comp and I recalled the cube marcus had, but I didn't want the same one as his. So I got the V350.

This build will be powered by an E7200 and 4890 and eventually internally watercooled.

The name of this build had inittially come from the cpu block with the Custom Promount that I'll be making to go along with my fuzion as the heart of the rig. However, I've add so much brass that I've changed the name to BrassIe. What does it mean? Ie in Japanese, means house or home. So, it comes out as Brass House or Brass Home.

EDIT: As there are time restraints on this buildlog, I've decided to keep it aircooled for now. It will have water cooling later down the road and I'll update the log accordingly.

Much appreciation and thanks to:
  • marcus000 for helping with the waterjet cutting files
  • fstfrddy for advice on polishing the brass
  • repo_man for critiques and ideas with the HDD cage.

This update is a combination of more than 1 update.

Update 1

I received the V350 and was so excited that I forgot to take some pictures but I got the important parts down.

Here is the stock front.

the left side.

the right

here is the JR P45. I've already replaced the TIM on both NB and SB.

here is the micro res turned into a bay res. i cut off the 4 tabs on one side then sanded and polished it to a nice clear look.

here is a fillport that i added on to the "top"

the BP barbs... these normal nickel plated ones will be replaced by brass ones.

a full shot of my new 3.5" bay res.

here is a mock set up of the pump and bay res.

another shot.

Update 2

hey look! packages from mcmaster!

let's see what we got.

this is a a 50' x 4" roll of neoprene with adhesive. this will be for the back plates.

that big round package? that was your 6' piece of brass baby.

these are the 6-32 and M3 screws for the D-tek brass pro-mounts. the 6-32 are for fitseries3's tops that i will be using and the m3 are for stock tops.

taping and marking off where to cut on my slab of brass.

my weapons of choice.

and a small stack of 5 that came out of that slab.

this is enough for 2x brackets and back plates.

Update 3

Here are some window frames for the side panels.and the front rad grill. both of these will have a brushed look.

here are the side panels. these will be powder coated a nice satin white. i'm still missing the screw holes so i'll be drilling them in later.

and a mock set up of what it should look like.

and here are the backplate and custom bracket. i was initially making it by hand but after 4-6 revisions of the original design... i still couldn't get it how i wanted so i decided to get it waterjet cut. it turned out great.

and a mock set up of it on the block and mobo.

Update 4

so i decided to get rid of the bottom T section from the res so that when you look in, you don't nee that annoying piece of metal.

its all cut now but its a bit of a problem with the res now as it doesn't have that previous support.. im thinknig maybe i'll use my spare one and leave it alone.

i needed to make a pump mount that would fit inside the case... the way i had it before.. took up way too much space and made routing tubing a real pain... soo... improvision time!

took a UN Z bracket and a UN ddc mount thing.

and took them apart! shortened the screws on the Z bracket and used the top section from the other mount. then i took a piece of aluminum which will be replaced by brass later... and bent it into an L. drilled two holes and voila! a nice new pump mount inside my case.

and a closer look at what i did.

since i'm going brass... i figured i'd make the rad brass too. i got some paint stripper to well, strip the paint.

before

and after. this is after some light sanding. i'm leaving some marks so it has a nice aged feel to it.

and the other side with brass barbs.

initially, i wasn't going to do anything to the front.. but its became a problem with the rad fiitting so i decided to just gut the whole thing.

the outline

and cut. hewever, there was a fitting problem with the rad wl fans on... soo...

a bit more cutting and its all good now.

here is a mock fitting of the front plate and rad grill. looks yummy!

you can tell that the rad grille is too long but thats not a problem. i was going to use iandh's rad grill at first but with some help from marcus, i got a brass one made. iandh's rad grill i had was already cut to size so i'm just going to line them up and cut off the excess from the brass grill.

Update 5

on to the cutting! here is the iandh grill ontop of the brass grill. taped off section is the one that will be cut. they are being held by m4 screws and thumb nuts.

and cut! looks pretty nice.

now to finish up the front panel. cut off that middle section

then cut off the corners and gave it a quick sanding.

and with the brass grill on for a mock up.

a picture of the rad. it looks silver but it was just the lighting.

next will be the bay caddy and hdd caddy.

Update 6

Well, I hit some obstacles.. the sidepanel with the bay opening was incorrect and started to feel that the bay res wouldn't go too well with the theme. SO! i switched it to an delrin aquatube.

drilled in the hole for the power switch then i need to cut out the hole for the aquatube. i've also figured out my HDD placement.

with this, i've scrapped all of the interior hdd cage and bay cages. i'll let the pictures do the talking now. next step, powder coat.

Update 7

while i'm having new sidepanels and a new face plate being waterjet cut...

my new card arrives! its a XFX 4890. the box was much smaller than i thought it would be since i'm used to the big boxes of eVGA and nvidia cards.

unboxing

the card and iandh heatsink next to each other

took it apart and a picture of the GPU. pretty!

and the iandh heatsink installed.

now with dtek fuzion v2 + brass barbs.

it was sunny out so i did some polishing of outer brass. my ghetto setup after got some tips and help from fstfrddy. thanks again!

the piece that was working on.

and the pieces that i finished.

i've also changed my CPU block to an Enzotech Sapphire + Custom Brass Mount since you can see more brass than the other.
Enzotech Sapphire SCW

though i might decide to change it again to a Enzotech Luna + Custom Brass Mount. we'll see.

Update 8

my new side panels and face panels finished and picked them up.

there are actually 2x of each panel. whats great with how i have things set up is that i can use either air or water cooling relatively easily.

here are the same panels with the brass linings. whats next is to get the case powder coated.

started sleeving the PSU. finished the 8 pin and 1/6th of the 24pin

4 pins left for the 24 pin. man.. reminds me how much work individually sleeving each wire is.

will be finished by the next update. then gotta sleeving 2x 6pin PCIe connectors, 1x SATA cable, and maybe a couple of Molexes for LEDs.

and we hava test fit of the side panel... PERFECT!
