Heya Zammo!

The square is quite handy for a busy bee like me that likes to change out coolers and backplates quite often. Don't have to unhook the PSU and dismount the motherboard.

In other words: For functionality it's not really needed but for practicality it really is useful.

*edit* Oh you meant the square in the backplate? Nope, I didn't touch that plate one bit. Sorry for the misunderstoodment and such por favor.
I did go for the cut out on the mobo backplate as you suggested and I'm glad I did. I've already reseated the CPU twice and I'm gonna lap it this weekend, so a 3rd reseat will have been done by the end of Sunday.
