Default Retro Fusion : The Atari 2600 PC **MOTM NOMINEE**

wecome to my mod thread.

For latest pics, see this album

Video of the Atari In action!

I will be building a PC into an Atari 2600 Video Game Console. This is something I have been wanting to do for ages, and there are NES mods out there, but we shall see if it is possible to bring an atari back to the future
EDIT: after a quick google, it seems that there is another atari PC, but it was ruined by them adding loads of extra crap.
I still havent finished my other project, (project bruiser) but I couldnt keep myself from doing this!

First, Some background, ripped from the wiki.

"The Atari 2600 is a video game console released in October 1977. It is credited with popularizing the use of microprocessor-based hardware and cartridges containing game code, instead of having non-microprocessor dedicated hardware with all games built in. The first game console to use this format was the Fairchild Channel F. However the Atari 2600 is credited with making the plug-in concept popular among the game-playing public"

One of the gaming Pioneers.

I will try to keep to the stock look as much as I possibly can, however, there will be some things I need to cut or replace. I am sorry in advance for these!
Oh, BTW, this is a non-working console, don't worry
okay, initial pics.

The Stock console, exterior

to give an Idea of size (the ruler is my sisters...I'm called Nick)

I opened it up....my first thought: IS THAT IT?
this is some SERIOUSLY old tech!

Micro-ATX mobo just fits, however the intel hsf makes it too large to fit. more on this in a minute.

I will use these switches!

I have already identified modding targets!
cut here, here, here!

It looks as if I am going to have to use a laptop motherboard, as they are much smaller, have an external PSU, and since there will be no fans, cooler. they also have wireless I'll have to find one with a buggered screen on fleabay, unless I get a donation (HINT HINT GUYS! )
I reckon the HDD and Optical drive could be mounted underneath the mobo (still inside the 'case' OFC), but we shall have to see.

thanks, and any comments, please ask. you can expect a reply to comments within an hour, I'm that obsessed!

To Do list (2/5/09)
  • Solder Atari Power and Reset switches
  • Buy a Wifi and Bluetooth mini PCI card. There is no point adding extra bulk with USB sticks.
  • Mod the Cartridge holder. ATM it is a massive hunk of metal, with only a tiny bit visible from the outside. It takes lots of room up!
  • Cut hole for DVD drive (self explanatory) NO LONGER POSSIBLE
  • Buy two Dual USB hubs for the rear.

should be done in a couple of weekends.
