What I mean is this...

The red dowel on your rendering would be the female all thread. Just put two bolts in the ends of it to hold it in the tube that match what is holding up the rail. I wish that I had your software so that i could actually show you.

I did some brainstorming on the hook-mount and came to this:

A boxed-in triangle to maybe make it look more evil or something. I got some construction-site vibes from the original plan. Not being a wiseass here just my

It could also be more pointed and/or ornamented later on IMO. I think it could complement the star. In a way. It would also have to be made a bit deeper to commodate and/or hide the hook's eye.

Hey CR, do you have experience with Maya or 3D SMAX? How does Google Sketchup compare?

Heres something that just came to me, it nearly brings it back to the original idea but is pretty simple to do. use two eyelet bolts with eyes similar size as on hook and run a steel rod between them. thread the ends and use a bolt on either end. Bit of a variation of TDN's sugestion but without using the tube on the rail.

I just dont think the tube will look good there especially all cut up. The tube is too structural rather than utilatarian to start with. I think you should be looking at only using angle or channel iron with rod or bolts for the hook support, if you want it to look convincing.

I havent used sketchup, but I know its good for modelling most stuff, and it supports ray trace renderer plugins.

Ah. I have 3D SMAX as well (god bless being a student) and I always hate having to load it up when i want to do something quick. So I was considering putting on Sketchup to see if it would be better for quick mockups.
