Butcher's Hook - Day 00 - Workshop reassembly & tool tests

As I type this, Slipknot just came on Octane 20 (Dead Memories, classic had it been Butcher's Hook (7:09 pm NYC))

Anyway, since the warm weather is coming I moved my temp upstairs workshop back down to the garage. Mess 1

mess 2

mess 3

big mess 4

After I got the table set up, I whipped out some stuff I got yesterday. Angle grinder, various disks, some corner clamps, and some scroll saw spirals, since I had one left The dremel cutoff disks went hiding when the 4.5's came out lol

As I was laying out my hand-tools / common-tools to put on the relief table, I realized its a good pic to take so anyone starting out at modding can get an idea of what you should stock if you plan to get into modding as a regular thing (beer optional)(well, not really, but ya know)

everything back in its place

decided to attack the mess on the back wall which I wanted to do last summer during Intelli. Finally moved the x's crap inside the basement and begane setting up MY space how I want it

the extra shelving that has been in my way since last summer was first

A bit more orderly. not finished, but better. The scroll saw is gonna go on the left when I get rid of the roland drum boxes, then the drill press (which is still upstairs) will go next to my main table (left of it)

ok enough workshop stuff, lets see project stuff...

STEEL!
2 * 12" x 12" x 1/16" (covered in machine oil)

3/8" x 3' x 2" for hook trolley rail

noew thats a piece of steel mates

1"x1"x1/8" thick steel tube (2 * 6') and 3/16" steel rod (2 * 6')

and I am glad I ordered 3' instead of 1', as you can see its short. I needed 12" exactly
well, how we gonna cut this heavy steel? With a dremel, with a saw? That's not a saw...

now that's a saw!!

when this big boy came out the 4.5's went to go hide with the dremel disks, I still cant find any of them

slapped a piece of aluminum channel bar on there (from intelli rails, if you recall) When dremelling these during Intelli, it took 5-10 mins to cut thru, continuously fighting off blade binding

fired up this saw as a test

after that I tried some 1/8" steel flat bar

literally like butter

the 14" chop saw made sick quick work of the test pieces, with not much more noise than a circular saw (wear ear plugs always).

Since it was raining and I couldnt weld test anyway I fore-went cutting the steel square tube. All of that will have to wait until next weekend, when the project starts, starts.

thanks for watching

Chop swas are awsome amounts of fun!! I've only ever used a wood one, but it was so easy, does that make me sound strange lol. Also that is one crazy big cutting disc, I like the shade of black it is though.

May I suggest makin like a rack on the wall behind your table to mount your smaller hand tools on, like claw hammers etc. My dad made one in hid workshop buy just putting nails in the relevant places to support the various tools and it makes life 10x easier imo.

Yeah right. Watching you work is better than watching TV man.....Just sitting here eating my popcorn as usual, soaking it all in.....

I have a chop saw too....I bought it when I dropped the new electrical service to the garage, to use on the heavy gauge conduit. Those things are beastly for sure. (My garage has it's own 200 amp electrical panel, with only 6 circuits in it). They beat a hacksaw any day of the week.

Edit: As for the wall idea, just get some pegboard with some hooks and you will be good to go. You could have all those tools on the wall for 20 bucks or so. (or you might as well buy a tool box to keep your excellent modding hardware safe and sound. You have quite the collection now. Just an example that I think would serve you well: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...yword=tool+box).

thanks Ram, yeah those chop saws are cool for sure. Nice on the 200 Amp dedicated service to your garage, that must rock having hi amp 110's and 220's at your disposal. I kinda like my relief table thing, tools used most often are right there, but there's probably a couple things I wouldnt mind hanging on a wall. I had a Snap On 2 piece full upright tool box from my brother in law whos a mechanic, but I told him I didnt have room for it, so he took it back He ended up needing it anyway so thats ok, I kept the compressor That lil black toolbox is pretty cool tho. Theres a similar unpowered one for like half the price. Might be a good idea, I have to go see them in person at some point

cheers

Looks great, I can't wait to see this.

I'm not a big fan of Slipknot, I love Slayer, SOAD, Metallica and Motorhead though, right now I'm on a Metallica binge.

And I gotta play Enter Sandman (Guitarist here) at school because of VCE music.

thanks.
I grew up on metallica and slayer A band I was in back in mid 90's used to do that tune (Enter Sandman) I played bass in that band, but I am an accomplished drummer (drummer at heart) and pretty decent guitarist as well. I made a full length cd of cover songs where I track recorded the different instrument parts to form the full song ('98 timeframe). In 2006 when I got my roland v-drums it made drum recording infinitely easier since the kit lines out straight to a track device or PC. I did a couple of full songs back then too using SONAR Home studio all on the pc, just lining in each instrument for its track/s. Loads of fun, gotta get back into that one day. Lately I have really just playing the drums here and there, along with Octane 20 or various cd's. My new kicks are a7x and slipknot, and a couple tracks from bullet for my valentine. The song "Waking The Demon" on the drums will get your blood pumping for sure, since its a straight out double-bass attack

On a project note, I was looking for chrome-electroplating shops in NY and I found a good professional looking one in queens. I will get the specs together and fill out their online quote form, to see what kind of prices we are talking about with regards to chrome plating the frame. This outta be fun
