Love it so far, but I have some concerns about the chrome plating. The last machine shop I worked at had a falling out with the company that did plating for them before I started working, so I am completely unsure of all the details. But from my understanding of it, is that chrome plating is usually very thin. If you want it to have a nice, mirror reflective surface, the steel below it also needs to be prepped to a reasonable finish and polished. Now there may be different kinds of plating methods or what I was told could be completely wrong, but from what I know you will have a very hard time getting a nice chrome finish. It would be nearly impossible unless you have experience and the tools necessary to polish steel.

Just some food for thought. You seem to already be in touch with someone who can chrome it for you so hopefully I am wrong and it will come out looking good.

edit: It seems the most common plating method involves plating the steel in copper first, and then polishing the copper to a nice finish. Since copper is much easier to polish than steel it makes more sense that way. That means the steel only has to be prepped to a reasonable quality and not perfect.

^^^

I'm sure he'll pretty it up as much as possible before sending it off to be plated.

Now, I do have a slight concern about the location of the hook, shouldn't it be located directly under the wheel of the pulley so the weight of the star won't make the whole thing sit at an angle? It's only slightly off so I doubt it will be a problem, but I'd hate to see you get through the whole thing and find out that it sits a bit too cocked.

In any case, it looks absolutely beautiful! Aluminum is great, but steel is still the manliest of the metals.

Well let's hope that you don't need to - but let's also hope you have some scrap steel you can vent on when this whole ordeal is over!
