Agreed! Another tip for ya....If you notice that your bead is rounded (and starts to look like pigeon poop (it's an industry term), add some voltage until it flattens out. When it is rounded, you aren't penetrating the work piece far enough (not enough heat).

Just some thoughts. When you get this down, MiG will be a piece of cake. (and this cake is not a lie!)

yeah I am running around 75-80 amps and the butt welds looked ok (not too tall) Next time I practice Ill up the amperage and see what we get

was just checking home depot and they stock various plate and tube steel, in various lengths and thicknesses, perfect for small shop projects or scrap tests - all at really cheap prices. I think HD is gonna be the spot for me for steel since I have 2 stores within a couple miles of my house (one of which I pass by on my way home from work) and no wait, no shipping basically rocks.

just thought i'd share in case anyone was/is interested in steel from local stores

I have a few side projects that I want to do (and the welding practice will be good) I want to make a small step-stool thing, and I need to make a frame/stand for my drill press. that will be fun.
