Current Status: ON HOLD
... until later in the summer due to getting a summer job in another city. Teaser: ![]() *This project needs a name, if you have ideas let me know! I am considering 'Fatso' at this point, I think it's sort of appropriate *Table of Contents: 4/16 - Intro & Disassembly part 1 - you are here 4/19 - Disassembly part 2 4/20 - Disassembly complete Intro - The Case A couple weeks ago I posted a thread about an old server I picked up for free from an instructor (read more here). ![]() ![]() ![]() The thing screamed potential so I did a couple renders in SketchUp to see what would fit where... Lots of potential is right! The case will fit two 360 rads in the front with room to spare (plus rads will fit in the roofs) and there's tons of room for tubing, HDDs, whatever. ![]() I didn't render the left half of the front panel 100% correctly because of the complexity. From head-on, you cannot see through the front left half, but there are ventilation slots up the entire ridged section as you can see in the next picture. ![]() My course is done and I have a few weeks off with nothing to do before I start work for the summer. Basically, I couldn't just sit around and look at this thing without modding it, so here goes... ![]() ![]() Begin! Popped a few rivets (my first time de-riveting) to see if my drill bit was the right size = success!! ![]() Don't hate on my drill, it's old as time but it works great. ![]() ![]() I used a cheap metal ruler as a guide for the Dremel wheel where I could. Seemed to work pretty well... ![]() ![]() All done and de-taped. ![]() Few rough edges but nothing a file, some sandpaper and some edging can't fix. I couldn't cut the opening any lower because the rectangular-ish opening at the bottom left corner is where the front panel clips in. ![]() I only have to cut a couple other pieces but the case needs to be de-riveted completely first. Gimme a couple minutes... ![]() Lots of rivets! ![]() This is as far as I got with three drill bits. ![]() Labeled pieces. ![]() 33 rivets on the silver bit, 42 on the black one and only two on the runt (7/64" instead of 1/8") before it broke... ![]() I ran out to buy a few more drill bits then removed the remaining rivets from the case. ![]() What's left: ![]() Seems the remaining pieces are spot-welded. Not sure what I'm going to do about that... ![]() I am going to run out to the hardware store (again) so see what kind of paint they have. I still haven't called around to see how much a professional powder-coat would cost but I assume it will be a decent amount more than it would cost to paint it myself so I'm undecided on that... ![]() I also need to find myself some black rivets or someone needs to convince me that aluminum rivets would look good on black. Anyway, not bad for a days work.

Case Modder

Wow! It is screaming potential. I can always tell because whenever I look at a case that needs to be modded, I get this weird twitch feeling. Should probably get that checked out lol.
Looks great so far. and, I have that same drill!
