![]() Quick Links: Pre-Build Initial Design Re-Imagining The Wood The Computer Components Redesign with Metal Legs --------------------- BUILDING Preparing the Wood Desk - Bottom Desk - Assembled Desk - Finished --------------------- Aspects that had to be cut:
I just finished detailing the more difficult part of this project and wanted to whet everyone's appetite. I'm getting ready to build a nice, happy new desk for my computer. This isn't a rebirth, since I'm also building a brand new computer into the desk. As you can see from the state of mine, I need it: ![]() Parts list: Wood(Cherrywood preferrably, need to do some research on strong woods before decision and purchase) Plexiglass XFX GeForce GTX 260 ASUS M4A78T-E AM2+ /w DDR3 1333 Support Phenom II x3 8gb G.SKILL DDR3 1333 COOLMAX 950w PSU 3x 120mm Case Fan 2x 250mm Case Fan 2x 4-port Mini USB 2.0 Hub Samsung 1TB HDD WD 360gb HDD WD 120gb HDD Cable Ties ZALMAN 9500A 92mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler Matrox TripleHead2Go DE 3x Acer 20" Widescreen Monitors plus a wall mount and fourth monitor above the three, but don't have the monitor yet Below are pictures of the Rough Draft ![]() This is a view of what I picture the finished product to look like. Nice, clean, and the only visible cables are the ones from the peripherals which go into holes drilled explicitly for them. To the left of the keyboard you'll notice a 4-port USB hub built into the desktop, for easy access for non-peripheral USB devices ![]() This is where those cables come out and are lead along the underside of the desk. Built into the side is a 4-port USB hub for peripherals ![]() Here you'll see how I plan to tie the cables behind the desk, and also have a sort of hook to hold the TripleHead2Go. This keeps the monitor cables conveniently out of sight(out of mind) and lets us run just one cable to the video card for all three monitors. ![]() Inside, I have two main 'sections' of cable. One on the PSU side and one between the mobo and HDDs. I can add more hard drives later, as I'll simply be using a thin, pliable aluminum to hold the drives in place. I'll likely also use the same aluminum to give a left-side wall to the optical drives and hold them level and steady. ![]() This is the layout, in the end, of the components. the two 250mm fans will do the majority of the cooling. Both the heatsink/fan assembly(ignore the fan pictured, this is different) will blow their heat straight into the exhaust, moving with the flow of the 250s. I added a couple 120s on the left and in the rear to give some air to the PSU as well. Additionally, I plan to elevate the board more than is shown in that picture. I hope to have the project finished by the weekend, but we'll see. I also want to stain and varnish the wood.

The speakers are going to be a wall-mounted surround sound setup. I paused to reexamine the design to see if I could include the speakers, but I don't think it would be acoustically sound to do so. I'm just awaiting arrival of the smaller parts to get started, and those should be here tomorrow.

Bad news!
__________________ My measurements are wacky and I can't find any wood to fit that doesn't leave me with huge bits of scrap. Going to redesign tonight with new dimensions. Probably be using poplar or birch, also. Once I have the design ready I'm going to pick up the wood tomorrow and get started.

New design!
__________________![]() This makes it 6' x 6' total with a 2' depth. At the arc it will have a maximum depth of about 4'. The reason for the redesign is this: The previous build used 7 4'x8' boards with a whole lot of scrap left over. This new design uses every bit of 2 4'x8' boards, along with 257" of 4x4 and 43" of 2x4 I ordered the wood today, some very good quality birch. I looked around a lot last week and this was the best I found, real nice stuff. I was going to go with Poplar from the same yard but the Birch should stain better. They're cutting it into the sections I want tonight and I'll pick it up in the morning. Tomorrow I'll start staining and get some pictures.
