CR's Tech Bench (quick and simple) - Spring 2009
Quick Links to updates: CR's Tech Bench - Day 01 - getting started (this post) CR's Tech Bench - Day 02 - fan holes CR's Tech Bench - Day 03 - side panel screw holes CR's Tech Bench - Day 04 - screw holes and drillouts CR's Tech Bench - Day 05 - ergonomic cm cutouts CR's Tech Bench - Day 06 - work lotsa CR's Tech Bench - Day 07 - its something or other CR's Tech Bench - Day 08 - tweaks and start prime CR's Tech Bench - Day 09 - sand primer and start painting CR's Tech Bench - Day 10 - quick paint session 01 CR's Tech Bench - Day 11 - final assembly 01 CR's Tech Bench - Day 12 - finished but mobo died in transit ![]() CR's Tech Bench - Day 12a - intake fan filters installed ![]() CR's Tech Bench - Day 01 - getting started Inspired by a few tech bench builds going on, and specifically by the one Wuttz did, and since I wanted to make one to replace (at least temporarily) my cosmos 1000, I decided to make this quick simple tech bench. Here is the basic simple concept... ![]() there will be an intake fan on the left, an exhaust on the right, and the bench itself will have an acrylic lid, that is hinged at the back for easy opening, and it will have one (maybe two) intake fan/s in the front. I will be using transparent "grey" cast acrylic for the lid. ![]() yesterday before I got started on the session for Butcher's Hook, I went down to the shop a little early and cut up the mdf panels that I need for this. two sheets are 14"x14" for the upright sides, and the two flat levels are 16" wide x 14" deep. The material is 1/2" MDF (medium density fiberboard) which you can get in small sheets (24x48) at home depot. I used a high tooth count circular saw blade (140 teeth, 7 1/4" standard circular saw) to cut the mdf. It works very well and leaves a silky smooth edge. Its the same blade I used to cut acrylic with on the Greenie-poo project. The blade is rated for plywood, plastics, laminates and cost about 9$ at ace hw. ![]() later today I will holesaw the two fan holes and predrill the connection points. then if theres time I will drill out the cable mang. holes and the standoff holes. then it will be ready for priming and painting. I have to double check if the primer I am going to use (regular grey acrylic Krylon) is ok for mdf, but eventually the paint will be Rustoleum Universal satin black ![]() Ill snap a few pics later when I do the cut outs. I only have an hour or two for modding today, and I need a break from "the hook", so this should be a fun distraction. I may do some subtle lighting with some red led's once this is up and running. thanks for watching * This Worklog post was generated using WorklogCreator - Version: 1.0.1.5 * Free Download: http://www.mod2software.com/worklogc...logcreator.zip

Great idea. Your past projects have been amazing, this one looks like it will keep up your reputation for that.

Tech Bench - Day 02 - fan holes
got prepped for 4.5" fan hole cut outs on the sides ![]() taped off and marked off ![]() clamped the sheet on top of a piece of scrap notice the fan, thats to blow out the dust towards the door ![]() x-wife stopped by with my life... ![]() blam. that mdf makes dust everywhere, holy hell. my shop is covered in it from yesterday when I circular sawed it ![]() left fan hole ![]() same deal to make right fan hole (by cpu cooler) ![]() needed to test how im gonna actually build this f'er. had a bunch of left over 4-40 1.25" inch screws from intelli. loaded its drill bit (#43) ![]() drilled thru a scrap, then tested turning the screw in. nice and tight ![]() then I tested the 7/64 drill bit to see how 4-40 passes thru not too bad ![]() edge tested, drilled #43 ![]() then screwed in the 4-40. no bulging but I did notice some slight splitting (hard to see in pic but its there) ![]() then I did another edge test where I tapped first, and there was no splitting, but then I realized I dont have to tighten the scres all the way because there will be 1/2" panels subtracting from the depth ![]() tested it out on the tapped hole - no splitting Ill do one more test, without tapping, and leaving back .5", if theres no splitting then that saves me from having to tap every hole ![]() I wanted to mark off the fan screw holes but I couldnt find my template so thats that for today thanks for watching * This Worklog post was generated using WorklogCreator - Version: 1.0.1.5 * Free Download: http://www.mod2software.com/worklogc...logcreator.zip
