Default [Project] Blast from the Past: RetroBox 360

-= RetroBox 360 =-

INTRODUCTION:

Hey folks, my Xbox 360 has been in pieces for months now and I finally have the motivation to do something with it after seeing an Xbox 360 Slim mod in another thread here. Along with that I felt like doing a retro themed mod because arcade games and classic compilations/remkes are really all I play on my 360 anymore.

THE PLAN:
I'm shooting to slim the 360 down some by removing the stock heatsinks and replace them with more efficient, low-profile coolers, building a case from scratch out of acrylic and modding the case with various attributes taken from various old school game consoles (as well as classic gaming icons such as Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, etc.).

The other Slim mod I saw had the DVD drive completely removed in an external enclosure, and that doesn't do it for me (I still plan on playing a few normal 360 games) so I'll be aiming to keep the drive in the main console's case, which will most likely result in expanding it on the side. This might sound like the opposite of what you'd want for a slim console, but it'll still be thin and sleek looking.

DESIGN:
Coming Soon

NOTES:
I'm always open to suggestions and I'm hoping there are some fans of old school gaming that have comments/suggestions to share. I wanna pack this thing with as much nostalgia as possible.

I thought about it briefly at first but it's a little out of my budget and it'd make the console bulky, so I haven't entertained the idea too much. Circumstances can change though, so I'm not completely ruling it out.

Default Day 1 - X360 Hardware

Alright, I won't really be able to do much until I pick out some heatsinks and fans, so getting familiar with the layout of the 360's hardware seemed like a good idea.

Motherboard:

As you can see in the picture: thermal paste. What you can't see is that it's rock solid, completely dried up and the heatsink wasn't even making contact with any of the GPU (left) and very little of the CPU (right).

Heatsinks:

Not much, but I guess we aren't OCing it or anything.

RF board, Power Button:

Blurry pic

With these heatsinks it's kind of surprising the system is cooled by a couple of inefficient Delta fans. We're definitely gonna have to improve on that, and I don't think it'll be hard.

More to come when the cooling solutions are finalized. Thanks for looking

Pretty sweet idea. I remember seeing someone did a Atari/Genesis/NES/SNES console before using a gutted vacuum cleaner head as the case. I really wish I could find the site for you.
