Default [Project] Millennium Falcon (Update 9/26/09)

This is my first major mod/work log so bear with me.

I have had a friend's old HP 8765C Athlon computer in my room for some time. I was going to put linux on it for him but just as the bootloader was about to be installed, the power supply gave out after almost 7 years. I just recently looked over it and decided that it would be great for a mod given that under the bulky exterior plastic were straight square corners. I asked him and he said it was fine so here I am.

I decided upon the name as that was the name the original owner (before my friend) gave it in reference to its being shipped with windows millennium edition and promptly reborn with a more stable operating system.

this mod may take a while depending on whether or not I get the job I applied for.
So, without further ado, I pronounce this mod as begun.

my apologies about the blurry images, I don't even own a camera of my own and this is the one I have to use.

Original unmodified (mostly) exterior
Front

Perspective

Back
Why I say "mostly" unmodded (because of the corsair psu and the cut off psu bracket)

Side Panel

Case Disassembly

Taken Apart

View of empty case

My plan is to paint the side panels black and make panels for the top, front and bottom out of opaque red acrylic. I plan on using some white, semi-opaque acrylic behind the front red and cutting out an ati logo in the front.

like this one (minus the bottom part)

EDIT: basic concept I'm trying to achieve:

mini update

I cut off the front part of the drive cage (picture 5, on the left) in order to make it sit flush with the front of the case. I am beginning to think that the optical will have to be mounted elsewhere or I will have to go without and use an external as any position for the optical would interfere with the psu or heatsink.

Interesting interior of the case. Plastic top and bezel may prove challenging to work with but I'm interested in seeing what you do to this case

I thought that was really funny too. It's funny to me because it's so old CD-Rs were only recently widely available. and I believe it came with a microphone too!

That's what made me think it would be great for modding. I looked under the plastics to realize the case is all 90 degree corners which I think would look great with acrylic. I'm just going to scrap the plastic parts and make my own by routing out the parts underneath where screws protrude etc.

another update!

I further trimmed the drive enclosure and removed the 3.5" floppy bay. I have pretty much confirmed to myself that I won't have an optical drive and I'm probably going to mount the 2-4 hdds in the 5.25 bays with some of these.

also, that black on the left is a painting test I did with one of the scrap pieces. I think it turned out alright I just want to see if I can get it any shinier.

UPDATE!!!!

not a whole lot of pics (because I'm never one for taking pictures) but I did get a decent amount of progress.

Began measuring out the back panel for a hole for cpu cooler mounting

Lines Drawn out

Hole cut out an rough ground (I may get some c-channel for this later, not that anyone but me and the people who view this log will see it)

Also, I decided that I am going to leave the interior gray but paint the back panel black so I did began and completed the laborious task of disassembling it off of the case.

BTW: Spot welds are a *derisive word that starts with a B and is often used to refer to female dogs* to take out.

I may pick up a few scotch-brite pads, sandpaper and paint on monday and do the back and side panels. I am currently in the process of seeing if there is anywhere with a laser cutter in Tucson as it would be a lot easier to get the acrylic laser cut rather than cut it by hand.
