Here's the case I'm going to be working with. It's dated 1996, and it's an old server case, it's quite large as you can see.
![]() ![]() Strange I/O panel. All I've done to it at that point was a little rust removal. My plans for this case are: Matt black W/ dark blue mobo tray LOTS OF FANS! What I've done so far. ![]() ![]() Probably going to go pick up a 4.5" hole saw for this tomorrow. I'm loving this dremel. ![]() Any suggestions on useful bits for case modding? What kind of primer should I use, and should I use a different primer for the plastic? Should I sand off the protective coating on the case or do I just need to rough it up? I'll try to update when I do something, but no guarantees there.

Leds? Cold cathodes? Those would be good if it had a side window.

This has some potential. I can't wait to see what you do to it!

Well, I haven't planned for a window yet, because I haven't figured out how I'm going to fix the side-and-top-panels-are-one-piece problem yet.

didn't i see this case a while ago? It has a lot of potential for a good wc'ing case though, you could easily fit a rad in there with room to spare
![]() The only thing i can really suggest is to have something to support that PSU, it looks like nothing is holding it up. Completely offtopic but i'm going to do a case mod tommorow (just cable management, maybe switching out a few fans ect.) but maybe i'll post some pics for you all. EDIT. I just had an idea, would you want to flip the ATX up so the back of the mobo is facing upwards like the raven RV01, it would probably help in almost every aspect of the build but hiding those nasty cables coming out of the back.

You need a plastics primer and paint to do the plastics. Same as above. The surface needs to be roughed up so the primer has something to stick to.

Krylon makes a primerless paint for plastics (Krylon Fusion for Plastics), but if you scuff the plastic parts with 400-600 grit sand paper you can prime it with pretty much any primer (standard indoor/outdoor acrylic enamel primers) and then paint with any acrylic enamel paint. You dont need to have anything specific for plastics if you prep it like you would metal or wood. As for your metals, since you already have rust I would follow what was said above about sanding it as well as you can to remove all the rust spots. You might then want to prime the metal with a rust-blocking primer (something that stops rust after it has started, as opposed to self etching primer which is more to prevent rust before it begins). Krylon has a brand that converts rust into a harmless primer base, then of course there is Rustoleum products. After the rust is gone and primed to prevent more, you can paint with any normal acrylic enamels. If you have pits or divets where the rust was youll need to fill in those areas with a body filler. Bondo will be most economical but Evercoat Everglass Fiberglass reinforced body filler is better imho in that it will flex and give way further than Bondo, without cracking. I use that stuff exclusively.
