Default A few more LED questions..

Ok, so I am going to buy a pack of around fifty LEDs from some oriental guy on ebay hehe.

What is the "reverse voltage" and why is it 5V when it specifies that the LEDs run at 3.2-2.5V?

Ok, now LED stealthing..:

I want to do a really neat job in my case with these LEDs. What would be a a great way to stealth? I know I'm going to need some of these...

Hmmm..

Thanks!

there must be some case modders out there with good experiance with lighting lol - no one replied

to hide them? get those little holders you posted then try to mount them in places in the case that isnt seen easy, but allows light to get out and around in the pc.

they also seem to be able to be screwed into things, so you could always knock together a alloy mounting bracket and drill it for the led's

not too sure about the reverse voltage though

I took 4 years of electronics and ROP in high school.....we did a LOT of work with LEDs and projects that would be great for computer modding......that said, it has been a LONG time since high school. I am out of practice right now.

I do seem to recall that if you put 4 LEDs in.....parrelel(?), not series, then you don't need any resitors, you can run straight from the 12v line on a molex. Just buy some molex connectors, some wire and molex pins and make your own connectors to just the 12v and ground on any molex out of your PSU........

I believe the reverse voltage is like...how much it takes to break them down. A diode can only conduct current in one way, and if you push it the opposite way, it stops it...to a point. You can fry a diode or LED by putting them in backwards, and applying too much voltage. I think those break down if you pump 5v into them backwards. Anyway, make sure you get some resistors for those things....I think you have to have like some little 330 ohm resistors, but look it up first

I'm not a case modder, but I took an electronics class in high school.

^^^ What he said. And yeah, you WANT to run the resistors in Parallel NOT series. Series would draw too much current through all the LED's. You would need to incorporate resistors into each LED to run them in series.

EDIT: So, goto Radioshlock and buy some two strand wire (Red and black). Run that wire everywhere you want a LED. Hook the Red to the +5 line on the HDD power connector (red wire). Hook the black line to ANY black wire on the PSU. Now you have a 5V bus to work with. Tap (cut the wire sheath) the wire wherever you want an LED. Long wire on the LED goes onto the RED wire (If I remember correctly).

Just an FYI, I have been looking around at LEDS for the last few days myself.....

Check out what performance-pcs says about their LEDS;

http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...oducts_id=2556

Quote:
Add a 470 Ohm resistor for use with a 12v or a 100 Ohm resistor for use with 5v sources.

Obviously, that is for the single LED......and their LEDs are listed as 5v Reverse Voltage as well....which I think Ch13f121 is right, is what they can take backwards before blowing......IIRC.....

Now, you said you were going to get 50 of them? So you're not going to need resistors, you'r gonna want....capacitors and a circuit......unless you want to run 10+ molex connections........

Alright, thank you all for your great help. The main focus of this thread was to find out what reverse volatage is (I now know, thanks) and to find a way to stealth the LEDs.

I do thank your for your generosity in helping me wire, but I do believe I have already a method that'll work. I was planning on connecting a set of four LEDs in series and feedthing them off the 12V line. From there, I'd connect other sets of four in parallel. This should work.

LOL, no man, I'm not going to use all 50 haha. It's just an ebay auction that supplies you with with 50 LEDs. Oh yeah, and the resistors aren't a problem. I did the math, if I did only want to use one of the LEDs with a 12V source, I'd need around a 500ohm resistor. The auction also supplies you with 50 510ohm resistors heh.

Yup, UV LEDs. I'm also going to buy some white and blue ones. Possibly another color. Pretty cheap on ebay. I can just imagine chinese laborors making LEDs all day long hehe.

Well, can anyone verify that my method of wiring is correct? I'm beginning to doubt it after looking over the posts haha..
