Default Thinking outside the Case

Hi there, I have a workroom which is serously lacking in room, so I was wondering, is it possible to mount the Mobo and components without using a case, maybe on a shelf or something....

I need ideas and tips on this please, it won't be used for overclocking or gaming, maybe a file server for the other comps on my house.

anyone?

Of course it's possible, just make sure you take things like cooling and dust collection into account.

Yes the motherboard and other such componenets can be put outside of a case environment. However there are some places which are just not suitable. Due to the nature of electronic parts they are damaged by ESD ( Electro static discharge ). You can get ESD from static and areas with alot of static such as carpets and cloths and such. If you where to have your motherboard and such outside of a case you will want to rest it on am Anti-static sheet on a hard surface such as a shelf or desk. Namely away from sources of dust too.

I have seen that before, but isn't realy what I am after, I need it to not take so much room up, or be hidden away. Even if I went for a rack case, just as long as it can maybe be slung under a shelf, or out of the way.

Perhaps you could mount the components on a sheet of plywood, acrylic or whatever (taking care with grounding) and hang it on the wall like a picture. This would pose a small problem with the optical drives. To solve that you could build low-profile shelves perpendicular to the main board.

so what would be the best material to mount the mobo on, I had considered some thick MDF sheel, sealed and sprayed, with the mobo on top of it. But does the mobo need to be grounded by it's chassis standoffs?
