just use common sense!

make sure nothing that has to do with a circuit is touching metal or anything conductive for that matter.

what you can do is just put together the simple functions of stuff that is laying around.

i will take a piece of board and nail/screw the mobo into it so it doesnt go anywhere, and the psu and everything sits where it wants to go so it isnt all on top of the board.

make sure everything has room to breathe too.

one other thing. DON'T PUT YOUR BEVERAGES WITHIN A CLOSE PROXIMITY TO YOUR OPEN SYSTEM!!

I made that mistake once. haha. wow that was an experience. =]

Basically plug it in.. start 'er up

For open-case jobs.. i ripped out an old USB header wire thing and made some switches and leds to emulate the case ones (I use these for testing)

Basically as said above.. use common sense

LOL you want to know what I use if I have a mother board on my testing tray already?

The lid from an Applebee's car side to go tray. Basically just a big round plastic lid. It probally could get some static electricity built up but I am just careful not to rub it on any thing. Plus it is very rare that I don't use my testing tray (which is a removable mother board tray from an old computer case).

I basically went the other way around.

The first PC I assembled WAS outside.. getting a case was a luxury

AS the others said - just make sure nothing short curcuits (behind the mobo ect)
