Question Best/Worst CCL tubes/inverters?

Please post your personal experience with CCL lights you have purchased/installed. I am trying to make a little database of CCL lighting.

Lately I am having some real hit or miss luck with inverters and tubes--out of the dozen or so kits I have bought it seems about a 1/4 of them either have weak lamps, one faulty channel on the inverter, or are DOA.

The ones that do function out of the box are not always very bright--especially the UV color. For instance I have a no-name pair that are nearly a year old that make stuff glow from several feet away--and I have a brand new pair of logisys from NewEgg that barely make stuff glow from an inch away...

How about you guys posting some info/links/feedback about this..maybe we can see a pattern and use that to steer clear of shoddy lights

The best tubes I have found to date are the new 15" tubes from logisys--they are sold different places--I got mine from Performance-PCs--they have a large sound sensitive inverter that is clear and has a blue LED inside that makes it glow.

Of those the red ones are by far superior to the blue ones. In face the blue ones have blue stripes on the acrylic tube--which is wierd--as real blue CCL lamps glow blue through clear tube--they are very bright--but almost white.

So even when I think I find a make I like the quality varies by color.

The worst have been the almost generic 12" UV ones sold variously as Sunbeam or Logisys that have a light blue color inverter box--these inverters seem to be crap-ola--I have had 3 out of 6 of these malfunction. On two the tubes fell apart while I handled them.

I have some more coming from SVC that are claimed to be super bright UV--I'll report on those in a day or two.

Thanks for the input!

I picked up some AC Ryan OverBoost UV tubes from Performance-PCs that seem to be working rather well. Fairly bright for being UV.

2 12" UV black lights , ebuyer's own brand.

there ok for the money, one was dead on arrival, the other blew up after the wiring became loose lol.

some reason they both had different inverters :|

brightness 5/10

value 7/10 , they were about a pound on clearance lol

overall 4/10 , they dont work no more

I've only ordered 1 CCL. It was a Logisys Green Liquid Neon Thunder Pattern 30cm tube...the ones they used to make that had the lightning looking effect. Anyway, the first one I ordered was shattered when it got to me, so I RMA'd it. The second one wasn't busted and it worked fine, but my computer acted funky any time I turned it on...random shutdowns and such. Turns out the wires going to the tube were arcing through the insulation and zapping my case. I yanked the thing out and threw it away and I have never ordered another since.

Great input guys--the overboost were sold out when I last looked--I will keep my eye on them.

The first tubes I got about 6 years ago were from some odd little specialty place in Cally called ELwire.com or something...the guy was making his own from scratch and they are still working today. Non detachable wires cast into a metal pan filled with epoxy...

I "modded" my own off a IBM scanner. It's pretty bright for running on 12V rather than 18.
It's a 10'' white CCFL with an open inverter.

I have a bunch of 12" Dual Logysis kits. They (IMO) are the best you can really get, especially for the $$.

I also have an ACRyan Overboost kit....OVERRATED, imo.
The tubes a slightly larger in diameter then the logisys ones, the only reason the may seem to put out any more light is simply becauase they are slightly larger in diameter, not becuase they are brighter or anything.

If you can get them on sale, then ok, but go for the Logysis.!

oh ya....they are all UV and the light blue inverter ones!
