Thumbs up Pimping Part 2: Fun With Candy Colors

MetalCast Blue on the modded acrylic face frame on "Ghost"

Matching treatment to the fan

Doing a Gold base, green candy metallic treatment to Nekkid

Gold base...This is applied over the groundcoat...it smells like cat pee in the worst way...

Freshly applied the green is not clear yet.

Gottsta have dem Goldie Grillz

After the paint has dried more the mettalic starts to shine through. It takes at aleast 2 days for the full effect.

The fade...

It was real buggy outside so I brought these in right after shooting them... really made the house stink like a 50 pound gully cat had been marking his territory or something... phew

As soon as the paint had skinned I got thek back outside and started de-stenching the home...

Duplicolor is a lot trickier to work with than other spray can paints.

The Red in particular seems to give the most trouble and I have repainted Black WIdow about 3 times now. Sometimes the paint will fog for no apparent reason. Sometimes this can be wiped off after thapint has fully cured and looks fine--sometimes it seems to be under the surface and needs to be sanded.

The Blue also is difficult to apply evenly--it really shows any heavy/light spray pattern and has been a devil to get just right too. It also likes to fog up and so far this has been easy to buff off at teh end.

THe Gold is stinky...you will not want to do this paint inside. But it lays down the best of all the colors...the Metallic gold is very bright and crisp and even...the spray nozzle is different too... less fan and more cloud

The Green lays down great too. So far the Gold Green has been the easiest and came out perfect the first shot.

This paint needs about three days of dry weather to cure right. It can be lightly sanded after a few hours though...but for handling purposes you need to leave it alone.

It also is "hot" and will melt plastic so you have to spray several thin coats and wait a good while between them...

It will run and sag so again you need to apply even thin layers.

But conversely you also need to lay down a wet coat or it will not dry smooth...

It's pretty touchy. Humidity is bad...wind is bad...bugs love it...

Once dry though is really looks as nice as automotive metallics and is quite durable.

I used that Metalcast stuff...

Make sure it isn't humid or it will turn out like crap... I really want a rivet gun so I can do my entire case...

Also, the thin coat thing... super important!

you try too hard...laff

Yeah I found out about humidity issues. It goes on perfect on metal...its these plastic parts that are giving me trouble...the seem to leach out some residue from the plastic as they cure...like a fog...when it's done doing that you can wipe it off and buff it...

Wierd. I have not painted much plastic..so I keep trying out different things until something works.

The cas panels I want to leave black--I think that will make the accent color more appealling..plus stripes and graphices are great if you have airbrush paint and a good airbrush and can lay iton using masking ans stuff,,,but tape and spraypaint leave a somewhat ragged edge...and short of spending amonth building coats I will just skip it until i can do it correctly...or figure out a half-assed way that actually produces good results

But I think the candy accents on the top and front will be enough--each one gets a matching UV acrylic sied panel window like Black Widow... and other accents like that throughout so I think leaving the panels black is the way to go to make it stand out.

sand the surface, then alcaholl prep, let dry and then paint. If you still have trouble you can bondo glass the surface, sand, primer, wet sand, then paint.

Metallic colors rule the world! The only thing in my opinion that comes close are the hammered rustoleum colors. Hard to tell sometimes, when you screw something up with them.

I think we've all had a bug or two stick to our freshly painted products, and it sucks the big one, when you have to pick one out of the paint, then go back and re-do some small part. bah!

great job as always CD.

What kind of environment do you guys paint in??

I didn't get a chance to finish painting because my dad got mad about something that didn't involve me and destroyed my groundcoat and red metalcast.

The look on his face when I asked him why he was acting like such an immature twit... oh man...

But yeah, my panel is chipping really bad.

CD, just grab a can of Krylon Fusion. It makes a molecular bond because it like burns itself into the plastic...

Too bad I haven't seen much of a color selection. When I get some money, I'm going to delve back into painting...

Right after I acquire a dremel and rivet gun.
