I have written at least two FAQs on this very topic...the main thing baout acrylic is to not scratch it and to not stress it or it will crack or shatter like glass. A holesaw in reverse is a very safe way to make a perfect hole--take your time. A dremel will be a real learning experience and quite tedious in comparison. A jigsaw with the correct type of blade is about ideal but will not give you a laser like edge..but is easy to control.. The ultimate tool is a router and a template...but the expense there is in the tool..unless you are planning on a career in fine woodworking a router is not a smart investment for occasional case modding.

Your best bet and bang for the buck is likely to be a jigsaw as it can do so many things and will alst a lng time. A second choice that is nearly as good for the money is a rudimentary Dremel type tool.

just go the the hardware store and buy a hole saw.
If you have a portable drill or drill press it does the best job.

1. tape off an area larger then the hole.
2. Trace the hole you want to cut onto the tape
3. Cut it out

its as simple as that and the hole saw is 100% guaranteed round
if you dont know what it looks like here ya go

I used a hole saw just go slow and don't press hard. use 4 and a half inch for 120mm fan, and a 3 and a half inch hole saw for 92mm fan. Hope this helps good luck. Ohh yes as your cutttin trough you may see melted material gathering on the edges, Take this off while hot and you wont have to scrap later and take a change of cracking it

Router is one of the coolest, most versatile and dangerous tools you could use. Have your dad help you - of course this is assuming you aren't familiar with the tool. Definitely use a mask to protect against the fine dust it will produce, wear eye protection, use both hands to control the router and be careful.

A dremel with a circle cutter and a spiral bit will work fine for fan holes, a bandsaw with a fine tooth metal cutting blade for long cuts on sheet stock.

Stay away from plexiglass for projects, it will crack, use Polycarbonate, a bit more expensive but cuts and machines very well without cracking.

here is the dremel circle cutter;
