You can spray paint your CPU if you felt like it...not highly recommended, but to each his own.

No, i wouldnt recommend spray painting a case fan as you would pry mess up the motor by getting the paint in there and shorting it.

If you like wearing out your fans go nuts.

It'll add weight and throw off the balance of the blades. It'll also most likely gunk up the motor.

HOWEVER, with judicious masking tape, it would be really easy to paint the case fan FRAME- (Box around) and possibly the flat surface or "nose" of the fan.... just be careful to not get paint in the motor or on the blades.

^All speculation....

My main concerns would also be keeping i out of the motor and keeping the blades balanced. Another potential I see is that unless the blades are 100% clean, the paint will probably start flaking off when you spin it up.

I have painted fans before and have seen absolutely no negative effect on them and have seen no real proof there would be, so in saying I think you would be safe with a light coat, Also what proof if there that fans are ever balanced to begin with? A lot of fans have holes in the front and rough casting marks. Somebody show me proof of static balancing like car wheels on computer fans from the factory and then I would consider worrying about a thin coat of paint. Just my 2 cents.

Fans have to be balanced or else they just wouldn't work. Ever seen a ceiling fan rocking back and forth? That happens when the balance is thrown off on a blade usually. If a fan isn't balanced, it won't work efficiently. That is the reason most fans make noise later in there lives is from balance issues... that or gunk that builds up near the motor and the rod.
Same with a car wheel. If the wheel isn't balanced, you're an accident waiting to happen. That is why you tighten lug nuts in star or cross patterns, to keep the wheel balanced.

Get an education , fans of this size are mostly unaffected by small variations in the weight as there is an overwhelming amount of centripetal force acting upon it, the worst that could happen if the blade is unbalanced is that it will wear out the bearings on the motor spindle faster (its not called a rod), and when you balance a car wheel it is done by a machine that measures forces at various points on the axle, car wheels are of an entirely different matter and should not be associated with computer fans, as long as the fans are smaller than 120 mm they should be fine, make sure the paint is of a light coat and you clean and etch the blades with P600 grit paper or higher, this will give the paint something to stick to
