Well, I wasn't sure how to name this thread, but I knew it had to be something flashy, and initiative makes it sound almost important, so here goes:
Idea: The idea is to have a database of measurement-accurate 3d models for various cases and (I originally had water cooling in mind, but let's include everyone!) parts as to aid in the layout of our member's cases, and hopefully help put an end to the dreaded "hmm, i thought, it would fit.." Implementation: I've done a fair amount of mockups of parts in my own dealings with computers, has anyone else been doing this? Can anyone contribute models? Or maybe more generally, who can navigate their way through a 3d app? Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, they can all work. If you know sketchup, bring it to the table and let's see how we can make things compatible. I think this may have potential... anyone else with me?

Sure I'm with you. I'll be the final fitment engineer. Send me the parts to test fitment of and I will post the results. Then I will properly dispose of them.

I have no 3-D skills what-so-ever.
Generally I will use the components themselves, and build around them. I also have some string, plastic loom and other objects that I test placement with. I am a big fan of horizontal mobo orientation, and I have some sketchup plans I can post if you want, but they are very basic and have no dimension to them. hmmm... actually they are more conceptual in nature, not technical. The biggest issue that I have run into is PSU cable length.

As far as compatability, I'm personally rolling in Maya, but can port out to .obj, which the Studio Max buffs out there can easily get into their own viewports. If final exports are done as obj, there is a processing library that will actually load an obj, mesh and texture consistent. From there, we can build an app around the different parts. Any thoughts/ideas?

A good idea and fairly simple would be to take a popular modders case mod, say the cable management mod on antec 900's trace the mobo tray marking were certains holes need to be drilled etc. then measure and draw in pdf format, for people to print off and then drill using the template?
