Default Painting advice - Rocketfish

I wanna paint the entire interior of it. I have 2 cans of some generic brand black paint.

I have never painted on aluminum before, so I don't know how to go about doing that. Another member in the Rocketfish thread just painted it on, let dry for about 3 days, then went about putting everything it.

Can I do the same?

you can just rattle can it but you're going to have to prep the surface very well. as for me, i use MPK (Methyl Propyl Ketone) or Acetone to throughly clean the aluminum before painting.

but i also used very nice krylon paint so generic brand might not turn out the best.

Hi Legoman,
Like froggy says, you could just whack it on and hope for the best, but realistically, the paintjob's only as good as the effort you put into, so while it may "work", it would probably not be ideal. I primed, sprayed, and laquered mine and it turned out nicely. If you want to just do a quick job then why not, but itmight be wortwhile doing it properly to save hassle later.
Chris

I have some advice. I would recommend using a self etching primer found at most automotive parts stores/hardware stores. You see with aluminum it likes to oxidize, which is it creates a layer of oxidization on the surface of aluminum. The self etching primer eats down into this layer to the aluminum. A normal primer would just cover over the oxidization and does not bond with the aluminum. Then paint over that and you will have a far better lasting paint job that won't chip/come off as easy.

Ooohhh... I did not know that... But now, do I want to take everything out? xD Oh well, no pain, no gain.

Also, approximately how long does self-etching take?

How far you want to disassemble your case is up to you. Just read the directions on the can, it is like using normal primer.

just take the min. out as long as you can get in there without touching anything, smaller cans prefered, light coats are better than one heavy coat,im thinking on same, satin finish tho,i like some durability, just flat black will mark easily, imo ps:good luck

if you have some self etching primer it would also help out a great deal with getting the paint to stick nice. edit.. just saw someone already posted this. how far do you wanna go on this? are you planning on sanding the primer after? then putting down paint.

Yeah, I'm really thinking of going the self-ecthing with some Krylon Matte Black. Maybe some hole saws and c-channel as well...
