i dun really undrstd ur ques... i guess u mean take ur hdd out n leave it aside.. i guess its ok unless it get electrostatic-ed accidentally.. or drop/hit it... jus my 2 cents..

its ok if temporary but make sure it cant fall over or off of anything.
if its permanent it should be secured somewhere

Would your motherboard short out if you took a paperclip and started touching contacts...well same basic theory. On the bottom of the hdd there is a board, if your case touches that board then those contacts will short and end game. You can sit your hdd on the bottom, as long as metal isn't touching that board, but its risky because if you even bump your pc it could move wrong and poof.
Can I ask why you need to do this?

fan space. wanted to add a few extra fans in such a small case.it had a cage which is HUGE, i have a fan underneath where that is located i wanted to add 1 on top of that to cool the ram and the top of my 8800.its locked in, it isnt going anywhere. so your saying i should move it back? + rep

You should put the hard drive somewhere safe and well ventilated. So yes, move it back. Or create your own rack.
