karan.t - A few random thoughts on orange-peel (rough finish/coat you have) in no particular order.
  • It is common.
  • Sometimes it will get better with more coats of paint. The paint will fill in the divots and make it a little smoother.
  • Alternately, sometimes it can be caused by 'dry spraying' the paint. IE - a quick fast coat. Try making the coats a little 'wetter' (it looks wet, like you watered it, for lack of better term ). A slower, heavier coat. This ties into the above note, that it will cover in the low spots.
  • As Syrillian said, if nothing else works, give it a LIGHT sanding before the next color coat to even it out some. 1000-2000grit. You don't want to sand it in the sense of primer sanding, just enough to nick the high spots down. Then when you clear coat use a few (3-4) really wet coats and it will be pretty smooth. I used around 6 coats of paint on the front bezel of my Phoenix mod with no sanding b/w the color coats and it is fairly smooth.

Maybe some of that will help!

Also! Painting in humidity is not advised, the water in the air makes the paint unhappy, lol. Wait till its a little calmed down and overcast/sunny!

Hey, you stole my pic!!!! Lol, when i painted my case I did not get the grainy texture you speak of. Perhaps it is the brand of paint you are using. I have more pics of the painting process I went through here if you would like to take a peek The Evolution of My P180.

I also painted in my garage while it rained, in February. So it was cold still, not a good idea to be painting in the cold or in the rain. It came out decent though, I am happy enough until I can paint it again sometime this summer. Just dont try to rush and get it all done at once. Take your time with it and dont spray too close to the case, it will run and leave drips. Looking good though so far.

karan.t - I dug up some pics from my Phoenix build. Might help, or at least show you orange peel happens to everyone, lol.

This is the top panel. About 3 color coats, and two clear coats. The clear coats were kind of 'light' and 'dry' as I was running out (I had used most of the clear on the front bezel pictured below). But it didn't really bother me as much, its on top and I never look at it . However, thats what a dry spray can do.

This is the front bezel. Around 6 nice even wet coats. (You don't need that many coats for most stuff, but the color paint I had used was soaking it in, along with the bondo under it ) No sanding whatsoever in-between the clear coats. Just straight through all six. Pretty slick huh?

Edit: I realize the paint above on the bezel is not a 'glass' finish, but for no kind of sanding or waxing I think it is more than 'mirror' enough. I buffed cars for over a year at a body shop, I dont want to buff anything anymore! LOL

Tho the lower HDD cage needs to be re done because it was the first one i did and make a lot of mistake i am some wat happy with these, and confident enough to start work on my case

So i started priming my case

then ran out of primer
and i ran out to get some more paint and primer

all 4 total cost £23.92 (US$47.84 aprox)

only a tiny bit of priming left here

but still the weather is not good

and still thinking of how to get the right amount of primer and paint in here

i had the same problem. i didnt want to spray too much their and have it build up, so i sprayed SEVERAL light coats on to see how it would do. it came out fine. but i realized that with a floppy drive or a media card reader, etc. it wouldnt be seen. it would be completely covered up, so after sparaying a few coats i just let it be. same thing with the inside of the HDD cages.
