Default Properly discharge a psu before opening?

never opened a psu before. I want to discharge the capacitors of any residual juice. My idea was to connect a fan to one of the molexes and then bridge green to black with a piece of wire, to jump the psu. Will this work?

If not please explain the correct method. Thanks

That would probably do it but be careful.

That will work but it would probably take a while to completely discharge them. Maybe a day, depending on the size of the caps and fan.

A faster and better way would be to open up the PSU then hold up a resistor (say about 10ohms/800w to be safe) to the back of the PCB where the cap is soldered on. When the resistor heats up, remove it for a few seconds then put it back on till it heats up again. And keep repeating that until it no longer heats up. Then go on to the next cap. In a few minutes you'll have everything discharged.

LOL

One time i opened an old dell PSU that was already fried, took the fan out and put the - and + leads directly into an outlet and BOOM! and POP! smelled like fried electronics and killed the fan. it was scary but cool at the same time. It's cool, i lost no money, it was a school psu that was given to me for my experiments.

switch your rig off and leave it for for around 48 hours..then just flick the switch on the psu on and off quite a few times, that should do it.

well, I am glad I was strapped for time and no one replied by the time I went downstairs, or you wouldda scared me out of it - ha ha. I did what I said but the fan didnt spin at all. So I opened the lid taped off the inside of the lid which was separate from the rest of the unit, and put the lid back on. I'm still here so I guess it all went well

thanks for the replies - case closed

So it's not really safe to open up a PSU after turning it off, and trying to power on with the case switch a few times...?

Hey, I opened the PSU perfectly fine. Didn't really touch anything though. Still, it worked when I put the cover back on and I didn't get hurt, so win-win.
