Default Finding a cheap case to mod...

I'm looking for some help finding a plain, sturdy ATX case that i can use as the starter construct for my first case mod. I dont want to spend more than ~$60 since the mod materials will be costing me quite a bit. If anybody has come across a case or two like this I would really appreciate a link.

Thanks

^^Agreed with both posts. Check the Goodwill/Salvation Army/PC shops for old/used cases (heck they might give you an old one if you just ask politely and tell them you want something cheap for you first mod!)

All the cases I've modded so far (3 so far) have all been donated to me!

Thanks for the info, after reading some more threads on case modding I'm getting pretty determined to find an old tower for free. Is there anything I should know about old towers? Should I only take cases from the past 5-10 years, or will anything work?

Anything will work. Check my Phoenix and Sanguineus logs for some old case resurrections. Old cases have no limits but your imagination, heck, some of the them are built better than their modern counterparts!

Salvation Army, Goodwill, thrift stores, etc are all good places to look toward for some old cases. You might also check the local PC shop, they usually have a handful of old cases in the back, if you ask politely they might just donate one for the cause!

If its not about 7 3/4'' wide or wider the case won't fit the taller HSs like the TRUE and the likes. A lot of the older towers were narrower at about 6 1/2 to 6 3/4'' and the tall HSs won't fit.
Other things to watch is...
If the PS is over the MB.
Make sure the rear is an ATX config and further more, some had a shorter opening and modern I/O plates wont fit.

Try to find one of the huge ChainTech cases. They were originally server cases (I think), but people use them to mod now. They come pretty cheap and they are HUGE. You could probably fit a triple loop inside.
