In my current log (Sanguineus, in sig) I want the finish to look like an old factory, think steel,rusted,faded metal siding.

Does anyone have a link or techniques to achieve this effect with spray paint? I've bookmarked Bill Owens thread on getting a metal finish on some cabinet thing he was painting ( I have to re-read the article obviously,lol ), are there any more guides out there?

I'm kind of stuck on how to get the finish I want. I've seen guides on getting a tarnished copper finish from paint, but not steel/aluminum.

It's too bad you don't have an airbrush. About the only thing I can think of off hand would be to lay down a base coat and use some steel wool to ruff the edges up.

Looks like the window mod gave you some ideas huh?

There's this stuff you can spray on metal and it insta-rusts it for you. Gimme a sec to remember the name, I remember seeing it while looking through some other case mods before the modcomp started......

You can probably find kits for this at your local hobby store. Probably in the hobby section of Wal-Mart as well. I bought a kit when I was little to paint my wooden katana I carved to make it look old and tarnished. (Note: the kit was made for metal, not wood)

YESSSSS I remembered!!

First you paint the metal with one of these:
Metallic Paints

Then you apply the aging solution and leave it out overnight.
Black
Blue
Green
Rust

For an old factory look, you'd probably want to go with Iron (from the metallic paints) as the base, then use Rust for most of the aging and Blue for where it would have aged heavily, like around cracks where water would have collected after it rained.

You can probably also make some really rough, thick cuts with a dremel to create parts where the rust would have completely eaten through the case.

I think those are the paints I saw in the guide for the tarnished copper paint. The effect if really nice, I'll have to see if I can work that into my (non-existent) budget


Anyone have something else? Perhaps a technique (wiping the paint, or layering paints) to get this effect. While I'm looking for an awesome finish, I need it to be cheap too,LOL.

Well you could actually rust the case itself. Just do some light sanding where you want it rusted, and then put Muriatic Acid (HCl) on it for a while. The faster you let it dry (like with a blow dryer or something), the more yellow/orange the rust. If you dry it off slowly or apply it multiple times, you get more of a red/brown.

Do you have no limit to your knowledge! LOL, now that is in my price range,

I will definitely look into that if I can't get a satisfying finish from paint.

You think I could sand off the roughest parts of the rust and use a flat acrylic clear (for the uninformed, yes, they make clear thats not glossy,lol.) over it to preserve the finish?

Lol it's just a lab we did in chemistry class back in high school

And yeah I don't see why you wouldn't be able to seal it up. If you layered on a few extra coats you can probably even leave the really rough rust on. Just make sure you gently wash off the leftover residue first.

Oh and you don't wanna get any on your skin by the way

A few burn marks shouldn't be too hard to make with a propane torch (Put it on med-low or else you could end up with a hole)
