Going Broke Overclocking
![]() |
I prefer to cover acrylics with tape to protect it from scratches by using 3Ms green automotive grade... the blue home painting version seems to work well enough though.

I wouldn't use windex or isopropyl alcohol as they might have adverse effects on the acrylic; you really should get some plastic cleaner/polish such as the Novus #1 Clean & Shine.

I was talking about the metal machine, not the acrylic
![]() The machine is covered in a film of machine oil

First Time Build
|
Ok here's what I've learned from reading past threads and making my own thread on cutting acrylic.
1) Use plastic cutting saws, with medium TPI. 2) Coat saw with soap/wax. Pour water on acrylic to prevent it from overheating and melting. 3) Make sure you don't go too slow or too fast. I haven't heard anything on using scroll saws to cut the acrylic though, so can't give much help. ![]()

My experience with a scroll saw and acrylic is to use a slow enough speed so there is no melting occurring and that it is no good for long straight cuts. I do like the spiral bits but I do go through a lot of them. Patience is a virtue when working with a scroll saw since it is slow going with thicker materials. Best advice I could give you is experiment with scrap pieces and have fun.

I have taken printer paper to the bottom of my scroll saw when cutting steel plates to avoid scratching and it helps the saw glide over surfaces better! best used when cutting surface is masked with tape to avoid sticking to smooth surfacing
Just make cut outs that are ~1 inch larger than the feet of your saw and tape it up
