yeah we mostly worked on old cars that needed welding work pulling and bondo
so we almost always went to bear metal this is why I thought I was better that way.
It was how I was taught to do it...

Lol, yea. In a restoration sense, bare metal is best, your going from the ground up. But for most instances, as long as the paint is in good condition, theres no need. Just sand it smooth and prime over it.

This is really true for PC cases. They're
  • A. Not in the weather.
  • B. usually not victim to old/peeling paint (for the reason above)
so just sanding the paint enough for the primer to stick is more than sufficient, in most instances.

OT: I restored an old Chevy II at my last shop, we worked on it at least 8 months. I was -so- tired of priming/sanding/bondo/prime/sand/bondo/prime/bondo on that thing! LOL. I like collision repair better, at least it's faster
