Default Plan: Server Rack

Over the last few months I've become increasing interested in buying or building my own server rack. Buying a used one on the cheap looked like the way to go until I found out that they can weigh well over 100 lbs and cost $200-400 to ship. So, I decided that building was the way to go.

I plan to build a 48" to 72" high server rack. It will be 24" deep and 19" wide at the mounts. The rack will be made out of 1 1/2" 90 degree bend slotted steel. Today I went to Lowe's and Home Depot to source parts and the cost.

Home Depot had everything for 5-25% cheaper, so I'll be buying everything from there.

This is my MSpaint rough design:

The parts list for a 48x19x24 (LxWxD) would be"
  • Eight - 48" slotted L rails - $ 9.28 each
  • Eight 6" L brackets - $2.89 each
  • Box of 100 5/16" Hex cap bolts - $10.24
  • 100 5/16" washers - $9.00
  • Box of 100 5/16" nuts - $6.80
  • OR
  • Lock washers (100) - $13.00

Total: $123.40

I need help on the mounting systems. 3/8" fit through the round holes on the slotted rail, but the round holes only happen every third hole. The 5/16" bolts fit through all, but need a washer. I'm unsure if I should use lock washers or not.

Any suggestions for a top to the rack, or any suggestions at all would be helpful.

Looks interesting, a 3d model would make it even better. I'm trying to get into 3d modeling, I'll try to see if I can do it.

I made a rack for recording gear a couple months back. I found these pages useful. I know its a bit different, but there are very many similarities.

I'm trying to make a general sketch up. I got the LxWxH done, but the shelves are a bit confusing. You have to calculate in the width of the metal (Which you stated was 1.5 inches.) How many shelves do you want?

I'm not sure about the shelves yet. I'll probably use 8-10 of them for my gears.

I started in google sketchup yesterday, but I don't know how to measure stuff properly, so I gave up.
