Default restoring aluminum

i know the title seems a bit funny but i could'n think of anything else. so i drilled my case but because of the drilling there were bits that stuck out so i had to sand them down, but because of that, it has the sanding scratches on it.. how can i get rid of that so it looks like it did before.

Not really much you could do but to take the piece apart and sand the whole thing in one direction. Next time tape before you cut or drill into aluminum. Another thing would be to try is some Mothers mag polish on a rag, it won't get rid of the scratches but may lessen the effect of them.

What grit sand paper did you use? ~300 and up is pretty easy to get out with a cloth buffing wheel and some polishing compound but it would also shine it up quite a bit and wouldn't match the finish of the rest of the metal. Buffing and polishing aluminum is what I do for a living .

edit: If the scratches are very fine, some Mothers would probably work.

can anyone also explain to me why, if you tape the aluminum, it prevents parts from sticking out at the end of it. not where i started drilling but where i ended drilling.

The tape is to keep your hole saw (or other tool) from chasing around (gives it traction to start) Now, if you put down a wooden block where you are drilling, it will help keep the sheet metal/aluminum from bowin/flexing while you drill down. To get rid of the edges a rounded file will do a better job. I used a coneshaped grinding stone on my drill to debur mine.

As far as getting rid of the scratches, I'd say start with 800 grit, move up to 1200, and gradually go up until you're happy with the result.

Any fine scratches can be removed with a kitchen scouring pad and a lot of arm work
