Default Sheet Metal Gauges?

If something says its good for up to 16 Gauge steel... does that mean 1-16 or 16+?

Since the higher gauges are thinner sheets right?

yes, higher the number, thinner the material. so when something says "up 2" a certain thickness, it means it won't do anything thicker than that gauge.

but most likely it will, only u'll have 2 purchase a new piece of hardware after a short while

lol, i got even more buts... also if it says it's good on up 2 "16ga steel", if ur using it on stainless steel, it'll only do 18ga max. general rule u go down a few gauges 4 SS. and on aluminum and copper, u could prolly get away with 12ga or more depending on what ur doing.

16 guage isnt that thick. you can use metal snips to cut it.

Up to 16 = that or thinner and for what ever reasone the higher the guage # the thinner the metal.

dang... supposedly the 30" brake I bought is good for up to (or down to) 17 gauge steel... so that would translate to 1.15062mm...

I've got 3MM think aluminum that I wan't to bend... is it possible that I can get 2 bends off before the thing breaks? Or should I just return it and never dream of bending metals again...

or... would 1mm thick aluminum be enough to support a fully loaded Lian-Li A-05B?

I'm trying to build an undercarriage for my case...

Maybe I'll 2nd day ship some 1mm thick aluminum and test try that first...

What kind of aluminum is it and what condition is it in?
There are tables of bend radii for Al like here for example
http://www.precisionsheetmetal.com/h...20Bend%20Radii
This one is really short and doesn't have much in it but if you know what you have maybe I can dig up a better table.

How much does the Lian-Li weigh? It's possible to calculate the bending load on the Al sheet (ok a Mech E can do it ) and again it depends on what type of Al and what condition it's in.

thanks for the help everyone heh, I'm learning a lot on these forums already...

I'm trying to get a 90* degree bend with 3mm black anodized aluminum from PPCS. Its the scrap variety... I don't really know what to say about it... its in fair condition. I don't care which way the grain goes... so does that matter?

And I've thought of another question...

Does Lian-Li anodize their cases? or does it brush them? I'm looking at the aluminum on McMaster-Carr and the image for brushed aluminum looks a lot more like Lian-Li?

I'm used to seeing anodized paintball guns which didn't have the grains, and were more smooth... but when I google, I see 'Anodized, brushed aluminum'...?!?

However... I'll take whatever type of aluminum I can from McMaster-Car... so the way I see it, I could try and reinforce the 1mm aluminum if needed with more... or I could just use the 1mm aluminum as an exterior look and could prop some sized plywood in between the bottom of the carriage and the bottom of the case to hold the weight... (painted black)

edit:

in response to the weight question I just saw, I can weight it sometime this week once I fully load it up (with all the panels, probably by Tuesday at the latest...) but can you find me a chart or something with whatever I need? I'll probably need someone to help me understand it all though... dang the U.S. metric system... that alone causes me a lot of problems with all the conversion lol (even though we have the Internet...)

edit again:

maybe I should get steel?

What are the dimensions of undercarriage do you want to make? This (and the weight of the case) would dictate the necessary thickness of the material.

It's not the degree of the bend that is the potential issue, it's the bend radius. If you have a sharp corner (= small radius) you're more likely to have the Al crack than if you have a curve. Make it as curvy as you can to avoid cracking.
That black anodized Al is probably 1100 - cheap, common, and not mean to handle mechanical loads.
I googled "lian-li cases anodized brushed aluminum" and the first hit says that Lian-Li cases are made of anodized brushed aluminum. Brushed aluminum will look yucky after a while because the Al will slowly oxidize. Anodizing puts a "nice" oxide finish on it once and for all and circumvents the natural oxidzing process. Plus you can anodize to nifty colors. but you can also clear anodize so it still "looks" like Al.

Regarding supporting the weight - I'm not aware of any simple charts. It's more like this kind of thing (don't get scared )
http://www.soft4structures.com/Plate/JSPagePlate.jsp.
A good Mech E (which I am NOT LOL) can probably do it in his/her head.

For the application of the sides of the undercarriage the OP wants, the column loading cases are more appropriate; the link you provided would be more for having a load applied to horizontal plate that's unsupported directly under the the area of load application.

p.s. I am a Mechanical Engineer
