I've got the material to start my 2nd case mod, and I'm looking for input on design aspects and stuff. I made a rough Google Sketchup to show basically what I'm thinking. Here are some pics... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ok, so here are my questions... 1. My wood is going to be stained a Mahogany color. What color fans/lights should I use? 2. How should I make the PCI slots? 3. How can I connect a I/O shield to the wood? 4. Where/how should I put/support my HDD bays? 5. What should I use for a side panel? 6. Should I consider LC for this thing? If so, I was think of putting the radiator above the mobo. 7. How should I design a Power switch, LED, etc and where should I put them? I know this is ambitious for a 2nd project, but I plan to take the construction slowly and carefully. Any input would be appreciated. I'm really excited about this. ![]()

That looks really cool. It being wood, i am not sure about the setup though. I can not wait to see a build log on it though. Good luck.

Thanks. Yeah, LC would probably be too risky. Great ideas. Blacklights sound awesome. +rep

Ok, so here are my answers...
1. My wood is going to be stained a Mahogany color. What color fans/lights should I use? I believe that wood looks best in natural light, so maybe white LEDs, or simply none at all... 2. How should I make the PCI slots? I don't know... but I do know that there are case backplates that have the cutouts for the mobo, and pci cards.... already, but they're made of metal, maybe though you could canabalize one and do something with that... 3. How can I connect a I/O shield to the wood? get a drive bay I/O with media card reader, that'd be an easy solution, and supply you with a media card reader.... like this 4. Where/how should I put/support my HDD bays? I'd get a drive bay cage and mount them in the front behind the intake fans for cooling... 5. What should I use for a side panel? some thin paper, like those chinese lanterns, so that it'll glow at night, but be unable to see through it during the day, it will also be a little breathable.... 6. Should I consider LC for this thing? If so, I was think of putting the radiator above the mobo. If you go for liquid cooling, simply place a dual rad on the back side of those front intake fans, and you'll be fine... I would also consider backing those fans inside of the case, isntead of mounting thme on the front like in the sketchups... 7. How should I design a Power switch, LED, etc and where should I put them? I'd place them on the top front, design them how ever you want, frozen CPU always has some cool power switches, adn lots of bright LEDs...

What type of wood you going with? Plywood and MDF are going to be freaking heavy (as well as a pain to get to an acceptable appearance). I personally would probably go with something like ash or alder (both relatively light and very strong) or eastern hard maple if you don't mind the weight. If you want a mahogany appearance, why not just use mahogany? It may be a bit pricey, but there's nothing with quite that grain...
