The guy in the OP probably used something like this to wrap the tubes: http://cableorganizer.com/fray-resistant/

Yea, but it's all good now. I found http://www.mcmaster.com/ and they have the stainless steel sleeving along with tinned copper all for a little over a $1 for a foot. Much much cheaper.
