Default Case Power Switch

Hey guys I want to get one of those "pilot" switches for my computer but I've never really done anything involving wires so I was wondering if anyone could help me out
First of all here's what I plan on getting
http://www.mnpctech.com/Case_Mod_Toggle_Switch.html
1st Question: Do I just cut the wires connected to my current case power switch and leave the other end plugged into my mobo?
2nd: Can I use electrical tape to connect the wires to the new power switch? or do I have to solder? (never soldered anything)
3rd: What wires do I connect to the new power switch and where?

The switch you linked is an on/off toggle switch and is not correct for use as a case power switch; for that you'd need a switch with a momentary action such as th anti-vandal pushbuttons or fighter style switches.

The easiest is to cut the wiring harness off of the old switch and attach it to the new switch; this can be done by simply stripping the ends of the wires and attaching them to the terminals on the switch (depending on the switch either with screw terminals, by using crimp terminals, or soldering; just twisting the wire strands around the contact of a switch is not recommended).

Soldering is actually not very hard and can come in handy for many types of modding projects.

There are several electronics warehouses listed in the modding supply thread; any of them (with the exception of Radioshack) would have a large selection of switches (Radioshack does have a limited selection of switches). I'd probably sheck at allelectronics first.

Soldering irons are not very expensive; and just twisting 2 wires together and covering the joint with electrical tape does not provide that good of an electrical contact (solder is better) For the size of wires used for the case switch, wire nuts would not be ideal.

that could be made to work but youre better off with something like the toggles I used as "anit-jessie" switches in the Gumdrop build

they are toggles that are SPST, but are momentary in that they stay in a N-O state (normally-open) and when you flip them the circuit closes, but the switch is spring loaded and returns to the open state when you let it go - just like normal push button case power and reset switches, but in toggle form. Check out mcmaster.com or action-electronics.com

you need a "momentary switch". to power your computer a switch makes a connection for a instant moment turning on your computer. if a switch does not immediately return to the off function after being pressed it would turn the computer off and on repeatedly. i hope my explanation was fairly adeqaute as im very tired at the time of this posting hopefully someone can explain in more detail later on.

as said earlier i suggest soldering, a soldering iron is about 10 bucks, some rosin is about 3 bucks and some heatshrink is about 2. so for around 15 bucks you could get all the tools you need to solder anything you need to in the future. twisting the wire around and taping it is not a good solution and could cause issues in the future.

thread is subed if u have any questions

A toggle switch would work just as well as a momentary switch. The only difference is like wildfire said, the switch would need to return to 'off' once the PC is turned on. Otherwise the PC would power off after 5 seconds. (Most motherboards have the 'force off after 5 seconds of holding the power switch' option lol)

So just flip the switch, then turn back off once the PC is running. Then if you wanted to do a forced shutdown, you could flip the switch to on (same as holding a momentary switch) until the PC shutdown, then back to off again.

It'll work fine.

I'm actually doing this mod after seeing it on wildfire's computer

Performance Pcs has some switches with your choice of color or no LEDs and a cover for $11 bucks. Can't beat that!
