But does the case it self really act as a heat sink, I would think that as long as air flow is good the case doesn't matter.

Eh, it does make a slight difference, but I highly doubt it will be something to worry about.

Just use some carpet. You can just get a ton of samples from different stores and cover it with the small pieces.
