Default Intel Core2Duo on Abit IX38 Quad Problems

Why is this overheating? I have a core2Duo E6600 running on an ABIT IX38 Quad with stock bios and settings. What gives? I can bootup and everything, but the CPU temperature refuses to duck below 75C (~170F). I had to run it on failsafe settings to boot! Any ideas? Thanks in advance?

You probably put your heatsink on poorly, or didn't apply thermal paste.

ya idont think not apply paste would result in those temps, but ya try reseating the HSF

Fan speed hovering between 1380 and 1440 RPM.

Just reseated the HSF with a butload of arctic silver.

The HSF is the stock Intel fan. It is hard to install, and comes with some thermal paste that was probably dug out of the ground in India. With the Arctic silver, the temperature seems to be hovering around 60C. but rising slowly.

Aside for the overheating, any suggestions for another comparable/better board? I would like to nominate the IX38 for "Worst pile of poop mobo."

First off, temperature of the CPU has little to nothing to do with the board. Second, you're only supposed to put a little tiny itsy bitsy bit of thermal paste on, like the size of a grain of rice. Too much and it will insulate.

all that thermal paste seems to be doing something. I'm now running steady at 59C.

Yeah, usually thermal paste takes a few days to fully set, and in that time I tend to see my temperatures slowly decrease up to 10 degrees.

What program are you using to check your temperature?

those temps are way high, even for the stock intel sink

if the sink had that grey poop on it make sure you take it all off and clean it with high purity rubbing alcohol (91%). Apply arctic silver in a thin line from left to right for a quad core, seat the sink, give at a little twist back and forth while pressing it down to spread the paste, and make sure you start with the sink feet in the correct orientation, then you snap them straight in to the mobo (doing apposing corners together) they shouldnt be turned to be tightened because thats not how the work, turning them unlocks them

theres no reason that the cpu should idle above low 30's C (at stock settings) even with the stock sink

I bought a ZALMAN CNPS9500 and some arctic silver 5. The fan is large and in charge: I'm running at 34C/93F now. Thanks all.
