No it is not necessary by any means. It just makes sanding and painting easier. It might be hard to get an even coat on if you can't get into every little corner and stuff.

Ok, thank you. Yes I plan on sanding it to get a good high gloss on the paint. I dont think many people will be seeing the inside of my case but im a little ocd when it comes to things like that.

very thorough, and has definitely helped me figure out what i will be doing for my new 690.
had a thought tho, for those who care...it may be an idea to add the costs of each item -roughly- to help people figure out the price point of painting the case by themselves...

i mean, 3 cans of each kind of spray each, at 2.50 to 3.50 each is $22.50-31.50
sandpaper is what 2 bucks for each pack? 7 kinds....14-18 bucks..
rubbing alcohol, 2 bucks
tack cloth...no idea.... 3-4 bucks??
wide blue 3M painters tape, 6 to 8 dollars
shop towels you can steal from your dad lol
compressed air, 3.00 for 2 cans...

soooo kinda 50 to 65 dollars... for those who dont have much it could be a financial undertaking. dont get me wrong the rewards are awesome, but the price can still make people think a bit more about it.

yeah i went to a number of stores today, lowes, home depot, autozone, shucks, and walmart lol

so now i have a pretty good idea on supplies

DONT USE AUTOZONE!! freaking crazy prices! spray paint is 9 to 12 bucks a can there...
the new average price on spray paint tho is like 5 bucks...

edit: also...thanks for just being open to the pricing deal, didnt want to force anything

Paint for $9 a can is nothing new. Rusto-Leum Universal is $7-8 a can. I think Dupli-Color can be more.

Just depends on quality and brand of paint.

Will the paint still hold up pretty good if you let it dry completly and don't clear coat it?

Yeah let it dry for a couple weeks at least though. However it will still chip if it is hit hard enough. The clear coat provides an extra layer of protection.
