Default How do I remove a nail with a broken head?

I was trying to hammer in a nail into some wood. However, this must have been an exceptionally tough part of the wood, as I had no trouble at all with hammering in nails until this particular spot.

The nail would not go in very easily, so I pounded it pretty hard and ended up bending the nail slightly.

So of course, I began prying the thing out. The thing came out very slightly but I ended up snapping off (not even warping, it came CLEAN off) the head of the nail. So now I have a death spike sticking out of this piece of wood and I can't pull it out because it's hammered in.

The nail is pretty close to the surface, I brought it out most of the way but I can't figure out how to finish it off.

Maybe use some vise Grips to grab it and pull it out.

Is some of the body of the nail still protruding? Are you able to grasp it with a pair of dikes and yank it out?

There is a tool that roofers use that has a notched end that can be tapped into the side of the nail that will make a grove that will hold it enough to pry it out.

since you've got a bit sticking out; I'd suggest clamping a set of vise-grips to the spike and using that to pull it out.

Vice-grips or just cut it flush and counter-sink it if thats an option.

Instead of vicescripts, use the longest pair of side-cutters you can find, pinch the nail firmly, but don't cut it off, and pry using the wood as the fulcrum point. Won't work on a spike, but a nail in the 1"-3" range it may.

EDIT - if it's almost flush now, just wap it with the hammer to drive it in a little further and be done with it. For cosmetics, just put some wood filler in the recess.
