You can get screw-in rails that attach to HDD's and optical drives that will sit nicely in grooves. This would allow the drives to slide in and out easily. A locking mechanism could also be implemented, but I have done this in the past using friction to hold them in place.... it's a techstation so I generally don't get overly worked about having everything locked down.

You have probably covered this, but just in case, you will need ample openings on the backside of the drive areas so that you can route power and data cables.

And there we have it.

I like that rail idea. I was toying with that. I think for the HDD I will have just a small shelf or rail on one side and secure the right side with a thumbscrew. I agree about it being a tech station, I just don't want one bump and HDDs everywhere.

Here is the back of the tech station:

Since that panel is removable, I have full access to back the of the drives. That panel will also be held in place by magnets on the four corners.

as a person who uses a tech station, you really do need fans for the hdd while gaming. daily they get hot but not horrid. however mine are in an area that is open on each end, yours will essentially cook them in a small box. i'd say a fan on the front detachable panel and one on the back

I'm considering a fan grill on the front and a single fan on the back. That should pull air straight through the HDD.

You may want to re-consider the passive intake.

I tried this on one of my builds (Gemini) and the results were lackluster. An active intake and passive exhaust yielded better cooling results (Halcyon).

I am not saying that it won't work, just something to consider....

^^ would make less noise with only 1 fan. or get 2 fans both running on low speed

I could put a grill in the front panel and then mount a fan right behind it in front of the HDD bays. That way when the panel is off, I still have the fan blowing. I like this idea. I just need find a way to mount the fan so it is easily removable...more magnets maybe.

My current project has a framed front panel that houses 2 120mm fans. The frame is removed with 4 allen-head bolts.

not the quickest solution, but it works.

I like your magnet idea.

Schluter Systems (A german floor-covering company) makes magnetic sets that are designed to hold wall tiles in place to cover plumbing access....

So far, I liked the design. Just keep making your own personal changes too it and it will become a nice piece of art.

And Syr, that rail system is win

That's very similar to what I am thinking in my head. Depending on what material the panel is made out of (acrylic, aluminum, wood, etc.) I don't think I'd need too heavy of a magnet.
