Well, LED's are cheap. You could always get a bunch of them in both sizes (5mm and 3mm) and use what you need.. use the leftovers to light up the case instead of neon?

You measure the diameter of the led, and the length of a 5mm led will about 9 mm.
But...you should just go with eflyguy's recommendation and buy a few of each (if you can't measure them) and you will have a couple of spares laying around. They are not expensive at all. Radioshack

that actually isn't a bad idea to make my own LEDS around the inside of my case

Yikes! Radioshack is the one place that they *are* expensive!!
Look online - google "red led" and select shopping. Look at the specs, then go to mouser or digi-key. They can be had for $0.11 or so.. ..a

They are a $1.50 each at Radioshack, at 5, that is $7.50. At Mouser, that is about $.75 for 5, plus shipping and handling. The cheapest shipping and handling is for the first lb, is $7.00 through FedEx, and that is a location in Texas, where I am at, and Mouser is at. Mouser: $7.75 plus at least 3 days wait time, vs $7.50 Radioshack: walk right in and purchase it over the counter. You are familiar with the shipping and handling concept, correct? Never mind the convenience of a local store for something as simple as purchasing leds, and not actually having to wait. Even at a $1.50, they are still cheap, in general.

Ebay for LEDs, you can get like a 100 for a few pounds. It is easy to tell the size of the LED, if it is wider than the two legs it is 5mm or more, if it is the same as the legs then it is 3mm

If you are wiring in your own LEDs, make sure you put in a resistor in the circuit to limit the amount of current going through them or they won't last long. Resistors are cheap and again can be bought at Radio Shack, etc. Here is a good resource for you for determining what size resistor you would need: LED Array Wizard
Source voltage will be 12V, "diode forward voltage" is the Forward Voltage rating of the LED, "diode forward current", again for the LED and this is typically 20mA, last enter the number of LEDs. This will give you a resistor value for that circuit
