I purchased the Lian Li TR-5B fan controller a while back because I liked the styling, its great functionality (4 temps sensors, 4 fan rpm sensors and a controller at 5 variable speeds) but, more over, for it's alarm mode.
When I was looking to make my red and black build I noticed there really aren not many if any fan controllers that have red backlights, just: blue, blue and did I forget to mention blue. Luckily the TR-5B has a second set of red LEDs that activate when the unit's alarm mode is activated (for failed fan/high temps). This is what I did: ***perform at own risk, certainly violates warrantee*** 1) Here is the original unit with a blue backlight.. how bland!!! ![]() 2) I then removed it from my 5.25 bay ![]() 3) After removing the front black cover I noticed the LCD screen has two sets of wires going into it on each side, in the order: + - - + ![]() 4) now for the actual modding: ***for reference the bottom of the LCD/PCB is the side that has around 40ish pins running across the bottom*** *** after using a voltage reader while my system was on, I determined: the top set of wires is for the red LEDS and the bottom for the blue LEDs, don't hold me to this but im am 99% positive ***-pinch both negative (-) wires in the middle together w/ needle nose pliers ensuring contact -cut the positive (+) wire on the bottom on both sides (furthest wire down on right and left) and make sure both sides aren't touching each other, ( used scisors and ruined my reset button in the process, so use wire cutters) ***making sure the side left attached to the PCB is fairly long*** -wrap a short wire with lengthy stripped ends (to ensure maximum contact)around the intact positive (+) wire on the top and connect to the wire on the bottom (around the remaining part coming from the bottom positive (+) wire's PCB) ensuring the wire isn't touching anything else near it, for both sides -you may then use hot glue to keep the wires in place on both sides but be careful of the buttons, try to keep glue as thin as possible not to distrupt the PCB from fitting properly with the buttons free in the black plate ***solder will work too and be much more efficient if you are experienced*** it should look something like this on both sides: ***even this wire was too long but still worked/fit back in with the black cover*** 6)then turn on your system to ensure everything is working fine, reassemble and install The finished product should look something like this: ![]() which goes together much better now with this: ![]() unfortunately I disconnected a temp probe in the process so I need to remove it again and plug it in but other than that this beast worked fine and looks a lot sharper and more vivid than the dull blue light hope this helps some guys with red themes make some headway with red fan controllers
